Passed my 70-680 on Thurs, then went to book 70-284 Exchange 2003 and they retired it last month

currently working my way through it myself trying to avoid the 'I know that already' syndrome and pay attention to stuff and make sure I really do know it all

I thought the 70-680 Windows 7 exam was easier than 70-620 Vista purely because there was no simulations in it, where as Vista I got about 7. I scored 860 in Vista and 918 in Windows 7.
I plan on doing the 70-647 but there are a few more exams I want to do first.

Yeah that will come in useful. You shouldn't need to do the Windows 7 exam if you've done Windows Vista (depends what you're aiming for though).
I don't mind simulations - they're normally easy enough and it's a good way of showing yoru skill rather than the multiple choice.
There is some bad news though. Prometric are upping there prices an extra £11 (so £99+VAT - which is around £119 per exam).
Luckily my work pays for them so...

They're only £88 atm so upping to £119 is a £31 increase ?
My new job are being really stingy, they won't even give me the time off without using up holiday let alone cover my exam fees
My last company paid £1000 in training and up to 5 exams a year
Yeah there's no point doing Vista now, most companies are going from XP to Windows 7

Prometric dont charge vat, so its £99

so its a £11 rise
only pearson vue charge vat on top of advertised exam prices, even thou i have read else where that exam costs are vat free in the uk, but we get charged due to the complexity of purchasing off the internet and the location of pearson vue
Bizarre - shows how long it is since I've payed for an exam - it probably was with Pearson Vue (I distinctly remember paying £103.40 so it was probably when VAT was 17.5%)
Shame really as I'd prefer going back to Pearson Vue as the exeperience was so much better.

yeh, i think ms stopped using pearson vue around 2007.
the testing center i use is less than 5 mins from the office, and host both peason vue / prometric in the same room, so the experience is the same for me.
not planning on personally taking anymore ms exams in the near future, so this wont affect me to much, thou in the last six months i have brought an exam voucher from a person from ghana for £38, and one from a guy in india for around £42, so you will still be able to get cheap vouchers if you look around

Could you have passed the 70-680 with little knowledge or just book theory of Server 2008 R2 or is it essential to have experience e.g. labbing with it to deploy W7?
Users of another forum say 70-680 was tougher than the server exams and recommend to do 70-640 first.
I need to know whether I need to put in the time and expense now to setup a lab for W7 or can I get by until I have passed it and move onto the server one?
I'd say I could have passed the 70-680 with knowledge alone. Though I have been looking a lot in to WAIK and imaging solutions for work (and deployment via System Center Config Manager) so that would have helped me. I've also used sysprep since I can remember so, again, that might obscure my views a little.
I'd do a lab for Windows 7 then extend the same lab for the Windows server infrastructure. There will be cross over though so doing Windows 7 will help doing Windows 2008 exams.

It really depends how you learn mate - I haven't used the ones mentioned but I'm aware of them from colleagues who rate them.
In my opinion, and what I did when I went back into taking exams after a years break, I decided that the first exam would be my 'test' exam. Don't get me wrong, I really wanted to pass, but if I didn't I wouldn't worry about it - it was to get me back into it.
When I got to the 70-680 book, I read it and did the exercises, got really familiar with the extra features on Windows 7 (Bitlocker, new group policies, WAIK, remote desktop, the differences in the way things are accessed, etc.) and then took it. I found the exam quite easy and passed. Obviously on a different day with different questions you never know but until you try it you'll never know.

I'm using the MS book, my VM server and anything else I can lay my hands on, looking to get it done now in the next few weeks.
The OS exam is not hard I don't think, just feels like there's a lot to it also it has overlaps with windows server 2008. We'll see how I get on soon enough!
