Is PSN under attack? - PSN now back up 15/05

How can a CC company know if the transaction is fraud or legit, if some haxor dude pays a plane ticket with my CC details how will they know if it is fraud?
Surely it isn't as simple as me filling in a form and I get refunded?

My bank even stops me paying for £20 of food loads of times at Tesco so it's seems like everything is fraud to them :p

Not sure i'd agree with that, there will be huge numbers of people with a PS3 who may have added card details etc. who won't necessarily read gaming sites or forums, email would be far more effective at getting news to those sorts of customers.

It would have been good if they added the announcement on the message you get when you try to log in on the PS3 and on the site as well.

I've heard that all personnel details including credit cards may have been obtained and I want to change my password but do I do it on the main website still?

Yea, but you can't log in at the moment.

Are the details the hackers got encrypted / hashed?

Just wondering how much time ive got to change my email password. If they are in plaintext it might already be too late but i dont trust the work internet so waiting until i get home.

Thanks, That's a waste of time though if you can't login to change it :/

Not really, they may well have already downloaded the list of peoples' passwords, so the important thing is to make sure you don't have that same password on other sites, and then to change you PSN one when it goes back up - it's not like they can do anything with your PSN account anyway right now, everything's down :p

You dont have time. The data could have been stolen on the 17th, thats a 9 day headstart for whoever stole the data before Sony decided to tell you. We are now in day 10!

Agreed. Many people use the same password for everything
I do that for work related systems, I have to use 7 different programs that require a password that needs to be changed every 90 days on most, I am SICK of remembering passwords that have to be changed regularly.
So now when I need to change one I change them all to a new one.

What's to disagree with? The websites and forums have spread the news far more quickly than email has been able to, so far. It wouldn't be right to just rely on one or the other.

Rang Halifax about cancelling my debit card, but the guy told me I shouldn't really need to as they have gone uber ninja (my words not his) on checking fraudulent activities and I should be covered or something or other. :p

I transferred most of the money out into a savings account which has no card anyway.

TBFH Sony can do one when it comes to adding new features at this point in time, just make sure what we do have is resecured fully and returned online in a timely manner. Adding new things wont negate the poor PR already suffered and more importantly the lack of confidence we consumers have in reusing the service...

Honestly they must think we are idiots, if we are satiated by such things...

ps3ud0

lol uber ninja.

I called my bank and told them i accidentally entered my security details incorrect 3 times online cuz of caps lock, so they needed to unlock my account. The guys response was " haha Fail"

Debit cards are not covered as simply as Credit Cards. While I have no issue relying on my Bank to spot fraud my wife and I have at different times been cloned and had money removed from our account. Sure we got it back a week later but it was still an inconvienience.

Far easier to cancel the debit card and get a new one. Luckily we have a joint account and can still access our account for money through her card.

Personally I'm happier with safe than sorry, Oh yeah I work as a supplier for a major bank and you would be surprised how much fraud does get through, still for those that aren't worried it's fine but my bank recommeded cancelling and i'm happy with that advice.

Because there will be vast swathes of PS3 owners who are still completely clueless and will only be aware of things once emails arrive.

I didn't say it should be kept solely to emails but I disagree that forums and gaming websites are able to 'reach far further' than email as you originally suggested. They'll reach a limited audience (ie. gamers who read gaming sites and forums) far far faster but I don't agree that they will reach further.

I meant within the timeframe we've had so far. Sorry, should have clarified that a little more.

Apparently theyre working to get the network back up and running within the week!

Called up my back to discuss personal related things. After that I thought I raise this whole PSN issue with them. Person on the phone said I shouldnt worry too much. Apparently if anything were to happen I'd get my money back. He went on to say he'd understand if I wanted to cancel my card.
