Final Fantasy VII

I much preferred the mechanics in FFVIII since it was quite deep and complicated, but very powerful when you junction the right magic to the right stats e.g. 100% Death, Esuna for resists etc.

The Materia system in FFVII was just as powerful, but it was far too easy to the point that you could quickly make every character a complete clone of each other and some just became redundant.

The biggest problem with final fantasy 7 was that in the end you could end up dealing a lot more damage with a normal attack than with any of the magic in the game(bar that KOTR summon). With W/cut (i think, can't remember) you could do about 20,000, whereas magic/summons could only do 9,999 at most!
FFVIII is much more balanced in that respect. You have to think about which attack to use far more.

Early FFVII in midgar is just amazing though!

Yeah a lot of magic and summon Materia became redundant very quickly once you was powerful enough. Cloud with Mimic Materia and his Omnislash Limit Break makes everything, including the Weapons such a breeze.

Quad-Cut was insane, you could do 40,000 with it just by normal attacking, the sound the attack made was insane as well with Cloud.

Just haste yourself and normal attack constantly, throwing in omnislash when it came up. Or just mime omnislash.

And hyper yourself, so that you get limit breaks every turn practically.

It does however reduce physical defense, not sure about magical defense. Probably.

It's my favourite game in all honesty. I love the story, music, design and combat mechanics. Yeah the graphics aren't hot but the pre-rendered stuff was still nice to look at and the FMVs were awe inspiring back in 1997.

I love the story, music, design and combat mechanics.

Absolutely. The Music is brilliant. You wouldn't really want to listen to it, but as an accompaniment to the game it is first class. Really fits it perfectly.

On a side note, if anyone has played Crisis Core on the PSP (the prequel to FFVII) which i thought wasn't too bad actually, the music for that game is also excellent. It is the only soundtrack that i have ever actually downlaoded seperate from the game and listen to on my MP3 as i do normal music. It really is great:)

Good game overall. I hated the random combat when you were running across the world and hated the actual combat itself (weirdly preferred Parasites Eve for that type of combat - I prefer to be able to move and dodge).

The story was good and it had some great characters in it.

Bit of a weird statement to make when the random and turn-based combat is part of the JRPG style and then make comparisons to a completely different genre of game.

Admit it...who else had a tear in their eye when Aeris died? I admit it proudly, my saddest gaming moment :(

Have to admit I was genuinely upset the first time I played it too. Back on ps1 release.

Have the PC version now to. A chap from the boards was moving abroad and sold it to me for £3!!!! Just had to have it :). I have added the texture mods etc and it looks fantastic still

Tis one of gamings defining moments if you ask me

This needs to be on Steam, patched so it runs properly and with the PS1 music, that would be awesome...

If not, I'd like to have an iOs version, that would be awesome. They've already released 1,2 and 3, they need to do the rest.

ive got all the "old school" FF games i stoped playing them after 10-2 as they got to hollywood for my taste...

VII is great but prefer VIII style magic system GF's.

my first RPG's where Ff games got them on the pc atm
was going to play them but decided to GoG it and get baldurs gate 1 - 2

As i missed those years of pc gaming

:)

My favourite was F IX followed by VII, I appreciated VIII story but could not get over the terrible battle system, it was far too easy and it made the game not challenging at all. I still remember dying at Sephiroth or Kujas last fight a few times and the joy of overcoming that, specially when you're a kid, VIII I just remember steam rolling through all battles.

Just started playing this again! Love this game! Anyone else still play it?

Wish they would have made the remake when they made the ps3's tech demo!

Love the game!

Haven't played it in a year or so but every so often I go back to it and play it through from scratch. Still the best game ever made in my opinion :D

My number one game of all time Is FF7 FF5 is 2nd. I even named my daughter after a FF char and my 3 cats after chars.

Sadly because of the epic scale of the game it will never be remade square have stated. Also square said that if they did remake the game they would want most of the original developers on it but they are doing other projects.
