Hi,

Few months back my Father bought an Accord 2000 model I think it was, autobox, mileage was over 190,000. Few weeks back the gears were slipping badly and the gearbox juddering, it seems to have pretty much packed in.

So today my Father bought another one, this is a 99 model, exec so better specced, has 60k on the clock, all seems genuine, has previously been serviced at honda dealers, so everything seems legit. The car seemed fine on the test drive, and on the way back home, until I switched on to check the climate control (whether it's related or not i dont know). After that when sitting stationary in traffic, the car sort of shakes and judders in intervals, then when you move off, it kicks, strong kick, one or two times it moves off smoothly especially if you accelerate very very very softly, but it doesn't feel normal and operates very differently to autoboxes from previous gen Accord. So worried that this one is gonna pack in again too!

So yeh just wondering if anyone knows what the cause of this problem is and whether they had the same problem.

If it tl:dr, basically the car kicks lightly while stationary and then when you move off it kicks heavily, like its kicking into gear or struggling or something.

Also two other questions, anyone know when they timing belt has to be changed? seen people changing at 70k, this one has 60k on the clock. Second question is how do you remove the original bose stereo?

Cheers.

I have the manual version of that car (I think, mine's an X reg), no idea about the box, but I'm afraid you basically can't change the Bose stereo without ripping the whole system out I'm afraid - at least that's what I have discovered through extensive googling. The headunit sends audio to multiple (6 I think) amplifiers dispersed around the car, and if you try plugging a regular head unit into it, the volume is too high to be practical. I gave up and put a tape adapter in, which is surprisingly good. I'd be interested if you find a better solution.

The cambelt is changed at 72K AFAIK.

Cheers for the info mate, that sounds like a pain the backside! Can't the actual stereo be removed with those adaptor thingys from the dash, or does the whole dash need to be removed? Main reason for wanting to take the stereo off is cos someone is going to break the glass and try and nick it round where we live!

Anyone else have any ideas on the autobox problem?

Oh I see, I doubt there are any easy answers to removing the stereo tbh, not what you want to hear I know. I didn't look into physically taking it out when I learnt what a nightmare it would be. It only has a tape deck though so shouldn't be too tempting a target for thieves, maybe cover up the Bose logo?

Found a manual online. To remove the stereo you need to take off the plastic dash covering, 4 screws and a couple of screws, then the C/C and Stereo and both screwed to a unit that has to be removed. Seems simple enough but is gonna be a pain to remove and put back.

Gearbox issue is still a mystery. Hopefully the torque converter won't go fuber.

Check the transmission fluid, I'd wager it's low & needs a top up.

The damage may already be done though alas.

Tranny fluid seems topped up, checked it the other day. The problem seems intermittent, sometimes it's fine at other times it's not, oddly turning on the stereo or C/C seems to trigger it sometimes, wonder if its the battery or maybe a solenoid. Just seems odd that a car with only 60k and well looked after too would develop a gearbox issue so soon, but I think this era of Honda autoboxes suffered from torque converter problems, disappointing to say the least...

The Honda Accord Owners Club THAOC might be able to help if you register there if it still exists but it sounds all too familiar of Honda auto boxes of that era, they werent very good, Preludes with auto boxes had a similar problem and people tend to steer well clear of them

^ THAOC seems to be down, has been for a while I think. Really disappointing that this generation of autoboxes are so weak, usually Honda autoboxes are bulletproof and have great gearing, wonder if the introduction of the useless tiptronic malarkey had any play in it?

@pinkribbon, if the webpage doesnt come back I'll see if I can upload it, it's quite a big file 211mb, 411mb uncompressed, it's basically a software with scanned images of manual, the manuals are not very detailed, not like a haynes, but decent enough to get by.

edit: found it on another website, think its the same one: http://downloads.hondatech.info/Auto/Manuals/Accord/Ab0VE.Honda Accord ESM 98-00_CD_ISO.zip

Given that my new Scania started to jump out of gear when I turned on my A/C, I think its fair to say this could well be an electrical fault rather than mechanical from the symptom you describe (I should not skim read :o)

garage diagnostic is your next move if the ATF is ok....
