not that linux rubbish again. jesus the slims were released nearly two years ago - they've never had official linux support. there's probably only a handful of people left with original consoles who want to run linux (badly). i said it in the last thread than got deleted - those utter morons think they are campaigning against the big bad sony and for ps3 homebrew when really all they are doing is ******* joe-public off. what have they done for me in the last two years? **** all except bring the psn down and really, that's not a good thing in my books.
That's what happens when the security is terrible any way. When the database is run competently, password and secret answer data is cryptographically hashed so even with access to the database the attacker can not determine the password.

Can't believe people are still blaming this on "anonymous", I can guarantee you that the people behind Operation Payback and OpSony are not responsible for this, they're nothing but kids running LOIC, LOIC does not do cracking, "anonymous" do not do cracking, it's just a DDoS tool.
As for the whole "they took other OS" argument, that's only part of the issue, the argument the hardware hackers have is that they legitimately own the hardware and should be able to do what they like with it and I can sort of sympathise with that.
But this "external intrusion" probably has nothing to do with either "anonymous" or hardware hackers, it's been done at a politically convenient time as there are already several suspects and it's easy to spread misinformation, which you all suck up.
As for encrypted CC details, it's only a matter of time before they crack that, probably using Amazon cloud services
edit: Sony were warned months ago that PSN was insecure and chose to do nothing about it, another reason to hack them as they clearly need to be taught the hard way. It's also perfectly understandable that someone might want to punish them for the whole root kits on audio CDs farce, that's at least a contributing factor. They're overly aggressive and are paying for it now.

Would agree. How many PS3's have been sold? ~50+ million?
I would imagine (guess) that in less than 0.5% of all those sales, anyone wanted/used Linux.
Quite frankly, I don't give a flying **** about Linux - and to use that as any sort of justification for ANY form of hacking doesn't wash I'm afraid!

Like I said, Sony have had it coming, they go over the top in copy protection, they put root kits, on audio CDs. Do I need to repeat that? I think I do. They put ROOT KITS on audio CDs. They need to be punished and the only way to punish them is publicly, so quit your whining. If this is politically motivated they won't do anything with the data anyway.

Its not just sony that are being punished but ALL of us with our card details etc exposed

at the end of the day this has gone far beyond wanting the Other OS option back.
It started like that, then it becoame socially cool to hate Sony for suing everybody left right and centre.
This then opened the door for the opportunist hackers to go ahead and bring down PSN and use Sony's current unpopularity as an excuse.

they disrupt our services and steal our details. tell me why i should be sympathetic again?
that about sums it up. I did understand those who were originally unhappy with the OtherOs feature being removed from the fats - SACD support was personally more important to me and i lost that moving to a slim. But what's happening now is now far removed from just peopel wanting OtherOS back.

So, what exactly has happened? Not been on my PS3 for a few months and then suddenly noticed everyone going crazy about it not working.
You might need a chair for this one
.1) Sony suddenly shuts down the whole Playstation network.
2) Rumours fly about what caused it, when will it be back up!
3) More rumours appear about information being leaked....
4) Sony yesterday announced that a lot of customer information (Name, addresses, D.O.B's etc) have possibly been stolen about 5-6 days after the shutdown.
They're not sure how much information has been leaked, how many users this has affected, nor if any Credit Card information has been leaked, but they can't say credit card information has not been leaked because they have no evidence to say it hasn't.
Roughly my attempt at a quick overview of things. Missed the parts where people are getting angry though for a number of different reasons...

well back in the day, they didn't, it involved pencils and ice cream tubs and it certainly voided your warranty.
Hang on, surely if you are a company and part of your business is to handle personal information and credit card data, you have to comply with certain standards (encryption and how to access the encrypted data), especially when it's accessed over the Internet (from PS3 to Server, plus credit-card payments going from PS3 to Server)? I can't imagine you'd be allowed to store plain text credit-card numbers in a database??
