Asus gtx 480

Okay, I have no idea why your GPU is at 98.5°C then. I'm obviously assuming there's no other card blocking it or anything.

Good luck selling a card that can't maintain decent temps at stock though...

i will be rma'ing it so i need a card to use , got £200 spare so i thought about the gtx480 . fed up with ati/amd atm

Won't you receive a card back though? I'd just stick with it to be honest. The grass is no greener on either side.

well my 6970 runs 98.5c @ stock fan speeds in crysis2 and any other dx9 game , so do they run hotter that that ?

have you got a different card you can test with? That does sound like a dodgy 6970 but if it is your case airflow then the 480 will run hotter, probably to the point of throttling, and, in the case of the gigabyte 480, exhaust the heat back in the case.

if it was the card doing it I would do this instead.

 That's just bonkers imo spending £200 on a very similar card especially while waiting for an rma job, it may make more sense if you were going to xfire/sli them. Spend about £20 on a temporary card and keep it for emergencies.

I wonder sometimes about the thinking behind going from like for like or maybe ~2/5fps more.

I'm pretty sure he doesn't have to pay VAT due to where he lives.

That said, I wouldn't recommend the standard GTX 480 (unless you plan to remove the stock cooler and WC it) as it is rather loud and hot. This one for £191.66 would be a much better bet.

didn't think of that!
I was planning to get 480 SLI and put one under water a the other one was a SOC but GB gave me a 580 as a replacement :D

Needs to exhaust the heat out the case,As i would be putting it in a small HTPC case ;)
(the Gigabyte with the 3 fan cooler would be no good..)

Ah, if its a small HTPC then the Gigabyte cooler one would not be a great option.

That said, I still wouldn't suggest going for a stock GTX 480 - the cooler is really quite loud (especially if you don't have a large case to dampen the noise a bit).

Instead, I would suggest the GTX 560 TI with the stock cooler or a HD 6950 2GB.

then don't go for the gtx480. The reference cooler is very hot and very loud, and the way it's radiator is arranged I can imagine quite a bit of heat being exhausted in the case anyway (top of the radiator peaking out of the cooler shroud). If you don't have to pay VAT, then a 6950 can be had for £175. I would go for that over a reference 480 any day of the week.

Nvidia has addressed the problem of a large monolithic core by using vapour chamber cooling in the GTX570/580, which gives them far cooler running temperatures. If you look at Anandtech, the furmark benchmarks for the 480/570/580 all exhibit roughly the same (ballpark) power usage (the GTX580 actually pulls more juice than the 480), but the 5 series cards run far cooler. The 480 uses a heatpipe cooler, which is frankly ineffective at cooling it properly (64db in Anandtech bench). If you can't get a gigabyte one, unless you like lots of noise I would avoid it.

Thanks Mojo

I most likely just get another GTX 580 for my HTPC case..
As i used one my main gaming system GTX 580's in my HTPC case for a while and the temps where fine..

Was think of getting the GTX 480 and clocking it down to between 600 & 650mhz to keep the temps down..
Have a GTX 275 in it at the moment..
