Hi,

I live in London and am hoping to get back on the water later this summer.

Where is the best place (Crucially it has to be accessible by train) to go to kitesurf in the SE?

I also am looking for a school, as I got to grips with the basics in Brazil over a period of a couple of years, but still feel I need more 1:1 tuition, so any good recommendations much appreciated!

Thanks

kitesurfer reporting in!.....<you could never guess from the username. :/

err...you went to brazil for a few years and you still need 1:1??!!! oh dear.
As a recommendation, find Chris bull at halying island, Portsmouth. He's the only one I know of with a decent rep, however thats Portsmouth.

Most important part is practising. I understand why you want 1:1...but its all about experience and that means going out on your own and making the decision...8m or 10m...is it cross or slightly cross off....and all that other malarkey.

No no no no... I mean I went to Brazil on holiday for a couple of years running and took some lessons whilst I was there. Both times I went out of season so didn't get a consistently good weather for it either time, but got enough hours (6 or so) to go from total n00b get a taste and get to grips with actually getting up/ staying on the board for some time, but that's about where my experience ends.

ah, fair enough. bit unlucky from the weather perspective. Where in brazil did you go? I spent 3 months in Fortaleza (cumbuco) as part of my ‘gap yar’.

Which is the nearest/easiest town for you to go to? I’ll help you out finding a instructor. I will still vouch for Chris bull tho. The facilities that hayling have were pretty good iirc. I had the 1 day intro by chris.

It was Aracaju, which is about 4 hrs north of Salvador. I was there in January, which is just at the end of the season, so is usually OK, but the instructor said I was quite unlucky with the weather, and then again in March which is a definite 'no' for a learner as the winds are not right, gusting and generally light. I only saw a handfull of kitesurfers out there in March and they all looked like they were seasoned pro's. (The sea also gets quite rough which does not help at all) Why Aracaju? It's my wife's home town, so the plan is, I tag along, and would, hopefully from next year love to be able to go out and hit the waves whilst she does the 'family' stuff (Hence me wanting to learn over the summer if poss).

Nearest town, well I live in Zone 3 London, so would say anything 'South' or 'East' really, as I can drive/ train it from London Bridge, etc. Thanks for the help, really appreciate it- will look up the place on Portsmouth on Google Maps/ TFL and see if it is do'able from here :)

There's loads of kitesurfing on the Sussex coast, almost all of which is easily accessable from Victoria. Working west from Brighton & Hove there are always kites on the water around Shoreham, Lancing, Worthing & Goring. Literally miles of unbroken coastline and a prevailing wind from the south west make it a bit of a kitesurfing haven. I think most of the organised stuff is off Lancing and the dudes in their vans tend to hand around Goring (which is much nicer). About 90mins direct from London will get you here.

Another addicted kitesurfer here. I kite at Exmouth, Bantham, Westward Ho! (yes, the exclamation mark is supposed to be there!), Daymer Bay, Perranporth, also Budle Bay and Warkworth as have a van on the Northumberland coast, and Boa Vista whenever I can afford to get out there (twice so far and heading out again in January).
