Is PSN under attack? - PSN now back up 15/05

I got an email this morning and they said it may be down until early next week, fingers crossed they sort this mess out to be honest. I am expecting some kind of compensation too for the possible risk of personal data being stolen.

Some people just don't understand how things work in life it would seem,

Glad I removed my card details from psn a good few months back,

"They only want to use it for homebrew! Nothing bad can come of that!" They said

lolz

I've recently moved to pc gaming again and not a lot on the ps3 is catching my eye, Just glad this mess happened now and not a year or two ago when everything was in full swing on the ps3.

Yes really :p

I don't actually care what you think or anyone else lol.

Everyone is thinking it, Simple.

The law suits have already been filed by some people in the U.S. - other people will jump on the band wagon, try and sue Sony and if it gets messy i bet they pull the plug on it all.

I bet that Sony will be proven to meet the minimum level of data security required for where ever the data is stored and the lawsuits wont go any where.

Its interesting that one of their updates refers to moving the servers to a more 'secure location' and all the references to physical security - which suggests possibly some sort of inside job.

Also they referred to catching who ever it was regardless of 'where they were in the world' again suggesting perhaps some dodgy Russian or Chinese group.

If they were negligent in their security then yes sue them but if they met all standards and still got hacked then it not right to sue as both sony and the customer are the victims.

One of my friends has had money go missing from his account in the last few days - could be a coincidence, but he has a PSN account.....

I guess everyone who has a PSN account and has money go missing these next few months are going to be blaming Sony

Jesus Christ. I can't believe people are still so utterly stupid as to think that this has anything to do with CFW and running homebrew on the console. Here, have an epic facepalm:

Yes you are right, everyone who is thinking it is simple.

Wonder by their words "moving PSN to a more secure location" means relocating it all to the USA where they would probably be more proactive (such as patching the servers) unlike the Japanese. There's a reason all the world's operating systems and software development are done in America. :D

I guess thats what the Information Comissioners report will determine. I am glad there is going to be an enquiry over this. While I understand Sony's need for being tight-lipped as its a security matter, we the consumer deserve to know more details about what happened, and where possible, be notified if our details have been stolen. Just saying 'it possibly has affected all users' isn't good enough. We have the right to know about our data, and take action ourselves against those responsible. Sony, or otherwise.

Annoying I have no idea what information I put on PSN! Can't even remember the password I gave them. On the plus I never gave them any credit card details or use the email address they have anymore.

I've already posted this quote, after someone else posted a link to the article, but clearly everyone who is thinking it is simple. (Now the official catchphrase ITT)

Rik Ferguson, a computer security consultant at Trend Micro, said: "This has all the hallmarks of commercial criminal activity going for a saleable commodity. It doesn't look as though they would have broken in directly through the PlayStation Network. Far more likely is that they breached the corporate systems and then moved through them to access this valuable data."

Breaching corporate systems means not using a modified PS3, no homebrew, no custom firmware. This does not even have to be a political attack, it could just be a simple data theft for the sake of having that data, it's valuable you know.

Here are the possibilities:
  • It's political and done by members of the homebrew community, this is highly unlikely.
  • It's political-ish and done by someone jumping on the bandwagon, for teh lulz or whatever, someone kid who wants beee-ee an anarchist.
  • Someone wants to scam you.

To sign up I think you needed to give all the usual details like name, address, e-mail, phone no. possibly etc. But if you don't use that e-mail, and didn't store card details, sounds like your data shouldn't be too useful for the likes of nefarious people. Fingers crossed anyway mate!

Jesus, get a grip!

There's more to life than being hunched over your PS3 - go outside and enjoy the weather!

As for the compensation claims...get your spoon ready as I would imagine Sony would invite you to eat something of theirs.....

Has there been any reports of people receiving dodgy CC transactions?

If they have all the CC details of 77 million people for 10 days I would have expected a lot of reports.

They get sold on, that takes time, then the people using them will make a small transaction to be sure the numbers are working, then they will finally buy something expensive on the card.

learn to read
There have been unconfirmed reports, Sony have said that the CC database is encrypted and they don't know if anyone has accessed that separate database.

It's possible that these unconfirmed reports are in fact lies intended to cause panic and to embarrass Sony further.
