Have you travelled to somewhere risky?

i'm due to travel to Marrakesh in Sep (flight paid for) and some idiots went and set a bomb off

still too early to say how bad it is there i guess, and no foreign office advice to not go at all. plus i'll be only be staying in MAK for two nights, but still

have you been in a similar situation and went anyway or...

I think you are still safer in marrakesh than lets say holloway london.

i venture into some of the undesriable schemes of Glasgow on a daily basis, i've even picked up dodgy undesirable forum members at stupid oclock in the morning

Saw the aftermath of the Warrington bomb when I was 9. Walking wounded, panicking people, etc. I wasn't that scared, mainly because I didn't know what was going on due to my age. That was, until I saw the look on my dad's face that he was trying to conceal from us.

This, and I'm due to travel near the 'Golden Triangle' in South Asia in a month, but I have to say even as a foreigner in Thailand I felt more safe than in Glasgow. Though I'm weary at police checkpoints in Thailand when near the drug supply routes, scared of a bent copper planting something. I've picked up some of the routines to stay on your toes though, always accompany the officer to the boot, even if your car has a boot release in the driver seat.

you're joking right?

Why do people here think England is so scary lol

I didn't say it was scary.

But nonetheless, if you walk around city backstreets (or even population centers at weekend nights) alone at night time in England, you are considerably more likely to be mugged/knifed than if you do the same anywhere else I've been.

Most risky place I've been too is Egypt. While it was fairly settled while I was there, they still had armed guards and stuff. There was an air of danger about. While not really risky really still not the safest place in the world even when they weren't in revolt.

Yeah Glasgow - home of the deep fried Mars Bar and it's full of bloody weegies :p

In all seriousness though Glasgow is no worse than any other big city in Britain or Western Europe and the rules are the same no matter where you are. Keep to the beaten track and don't venture out with the central areas and you should be perfectly safe.

//Edit from a personal point of view I'd have to say Naples is probably the only place I've felt uncomfortable in and I've been in a few dodgy areas in Scotland. Naples is just a complete dump (from what I saw) and not somewhere I'd recommend to anyone for a holiday!

I think a lot of people feel certain places are more intimidating because of the number of armed police out and about. Armed police on the beat in the UK still isn't that common, except in Northern Ireland. I've had English relatives visit and say they find seeing the armed police and armoured vehicles very intimidating but for me and my relatives who live here we're just like "meh". A guy I know went to work abroad for a while and said that one of the first things he noticed (being English) was the police being armed with side arms. And that was in Europe, not the middle east. Although he said he felt much safer seeing armed police.

I always felt safer in NI when there were armed police or Army patrolling, especially when I lived at an Antrim Road flashpoint. :)

I suppose for those of us living here (or who've spent a length of time here), seeing them about is reassuring for us, or we just become indifferent to their presence. But for people visiting I could understand their nervousness as Northern Ireland never really makes the news for anything particularly pleasant.

And with the way things are going at the minute, it looks like we're slipping further and further back in time in regards to the amount of security out on the streets.

I don't understand the fad of going on holiday to the 3rd world. It's like people are trying to out do each other in how sketchy of a place they will visit, so they can boast about how interesting and ironic they are on Facebook.

If you want a third world adventure why not join the Army?

Bolivia and Columbia - quite a bit of petty crime, but there are some nasty crowds about. I unfortunately had to go to Israel, but fortunately only as far as the border control (they wouldn't let us in) - still, felt about as safe as playing Russian Roulette with an AK47.
