I also agree, making the 2 right next to the brackets rather than a multiplication sign makes you want to multiply the brackets out first.

The answer to this really is, it doesn't matter, I don't care and I don't give a ****.

If anyone handed me this, I would ask them to gtfo and write fractions.

Oh and my caluclator:

Casio fx-9860G SD

agrees with me that it's 1.

your calc is not scientific. the answer is 9, clearly.

It is scientific, I think it's the one I was told to get for my A levels actually :D are you suggesting I should send back my calculator as it doesn't know how to do basic maths?

(for the sake of clarity, just found my other calculator so no longer using the phone app)

Like stated above people are confusing the calculation as a fraction in which case 1 would be correct. The lack of brackets around (2(1+2)) to create a single expression means the answer is 9.

2(1+2) implies (2(1)+2(2)) as one term.

Otherwise it would be written as 2 * (1+2).

I just don't see how (2(1+2)) is necessary and I don't think I've ever seen it written in that form.

It's 1. There is no multiplication.

If there was multiplication it would be 6 / 2 * (1+2)

As there is no multiplication sign the 2(1+2) is all included as the brackets in BOMDAS.
Therefore, 6 / 6

Yes or you're doing it wrong.

6/2(1+2) yields 9.

Or,
(1+2) = 3
then 6/2 = 3

then 3(3) = 9

Did you do maths at school or what?

There doesn't need to be a multiplication sign for it to mean multiply - everyone should know this.

It is 9, because it doesn't matter how defined it is because you do it left to right - which comes out as 9.

It does matter how clearly defined it is as calculators will not calculate correctly as they're either following BODMAS or BOMDAS and cannot equate them equally. The question is flawed and doesn't have a real world use and is more theoretical in nature.
