The Koran - Whos Read It?

Like ALL religious texts it's a story. A set of rules laid down by MEN who lived centuries ago and felt that the world would be better if everybody believed what they were told and followed a certain set of rules that propagated a status quo.

The human brain has an evolutionary need for a belief in a higher power. As children we have invisible friends, a few years later, we have gods.

Sorry but i've had firsthand experience that there are higher powers. For me God isn't something theoretical but something solid and concrete. The same goes for the afterlife. I've seen both heaven and hell and they are real though not quite like most people imagine.

Sure many 'religious' people find security in there faith/books without first hand experience but some people have had firsthand of superior worlds (heaven) and inferior worlds (hell).

As an atheist, I'm happy to believe in you there. Because any text only becomes powerful when men believe and act upon it. Unfortunately, religious texts tend to leave themselves open to interpretation and may out there are weak.

I personally find some of Dawkins' work inspiring and uplifting, I see truths myself in the explanations of Science, yet there are many who would see people like him put to death in the name of their own beliefs.

As I said above, you have your opinion, I have mine. I think you are probably wrong, you obviously don't. Nuff said, lets all get on with our lives...

The quran also speaks about scientific facts, the hydrological cycle, embryology, positions of the planets in the solar system, how mountains are formed and many more - all of those are scientifically backed up. Also the quran describes the big bang and how the planets and stars are made.

Carry on believing that if you want but these supernatural experiences can mostly be explained by naturalist explanations. In the same way hallucinations can.
Gotta scamper before you call me out on burden of proof, will post some stuff in the morning.

Not all of them, the first one (12th Planet) and parts of some of the others. I will get around to reading them all one day. I have read other books by him, Genesis Revisited, and Divine Encounters.

However, they are not something I would recommend to someone who wants to learn about religion, and I am sure you will understand why a series of books which put forth a hypothesis of a Nibiru colonisation of Earth some 450,000 years ago are not really about religion, only a controversial interpretation of various scriptures and texts.

Yes not really religious in a pious sense but the historical facts and theories are very interesting the fourth book was possibly my favorite (South America) I found out a lot about Jewish history and the bible in general from those books in fact I have since started to read the old testament on and off purely as a historical document.

The fact the Deluge story is in over 40 different cultures across the world is very interesting and a lot of biblical / Egyptian stories are found in earlier Sumerian / Akkadian texts is fascinating. And all the 2012 Nubiru worriers would do well to read them! 900 years to earlier :)

Where the Koran speaks about mountains, it's also a symbolic reference to the three mountains of initiation to gain immortality.

The first being the elimination of the ego
The second the creation of the solar body
The thrid self-sacrifice for the benefit of others.

These same three mountains are sybolicly expressed in the bible with mountains moses climbed when he spoke to god. Also the three pyramids of ancient egypt were symbolic representations of this and part of there mystery school.

There Koran like the bible is both literal and symbolic.

So do The Earth Chronicles.

Does it look like I give a **** about /b/?

Mind the troll.

Like all religious texts, its purpose is to scare everyday man into being subservient and god fearing. A text to control others with power of persuasion if you like. Unfortunately, you have the extremists who put their own slant on the words written and debase its meaning. Then you have the mouth breathing knuckle draggers who see the extremists and use that as justification to hate everything they find different about the religion.

Both the Qur'an and the Torah have references to treating unbelievers as "cattle for slaughter" You have to ask, if this is the word of God, why would he want to destroy his creations? The answer is that there is no perfect religion. Religion is another level of conscience that you try to align your life by if you are that way inclined.

For example in the koran (and the torah) where it talks about slaying non-believers and the like. The non-believers are the multitude of negative aspects in our psyche that will tempt us away from god and into idle worship like lust for money, sex, drugs and all other meaningless worldy pleasures. It's these that are meant to be slayed first and foremost.

Have you got it in English? I thought (though seems I'm wrong) that it wasn't supposed to be translated from the original language, because Allah's message might be lost in translation?
