Was driving home last night in the outside lane of a two lane motorway and was undertaken in the hard shoulder by a police car doing a fair bit over the legal limit sending all manner of debris flying. A few bits hit my car, one of cracked the windscreen on the passengers side close to the edge.

After checking the Auto Glass website, seems it needs to be at least 6cm from the edge so I think a repair is going to be out of the question.

What are my options? Anyone think it's worth contacting the police on the matter?

Insurance is with More Than, according to their policy fully covered for repairs. If it needs replacing I need to fork out my "own damage" excess, which it doesn't seem to tell me on the policy detials on their website.

I would write a letter to that local force outlining what happened. Point out that you understand they must have been responding to an emergency but your now out of pocket for your windscreen excess.

Nothing ventured nothing gained

It'd be a waste of time. He doesn't have any evidence at all.

The thing is the motorway wasn't busy, and they absolutely flew up the hard shoulder then stopped in the hard shoulder less than a mile later for no apparent reason. There was also an unmarked car that flew up the outside lane seconds later, pulled over to the hard shoulder and went around the other car.

Just had a look at the windscreen and overnight it's gone from a minor crack to one around 6 inches long. No chance anything else than a new windscreen will sort it.

I'll get on the phone to the insurance and see if they are open today and see what they say.

its only £60 or so and they will come to your house/place of work and fit it in a couple of hours for you.
Is tha for a new windscreen or a repair? I thought a windscreen would cost way more than that, obviously would rathe not have to claim for this. I have protected no claims but they always seem to still ask whether you have made a claim i nthe last x years no matter whos fault it was.

Windscreen claims are separate to accidents, so claiming for a new screen won't affect your ncb at all. And as long as you're fully comp then a new one will probably cost between £60-80, repairs are usually free.

I don't see how that is relevant.

£75 excess and booked in tomorrow. I'll get a letter send out to them with a copy of the receipt and see if I can claim back some of my tax I've paid!
