So wasps are like bees in that only one in each hive reproduces (the queen) and all of the others are drones, the drones are smaller and male (I think they are male?).
Sort of. Unlike bees though, only the queen wasp survives the winter as she hibernates. Bees survive the winter as a whole colony by packing closely together.
As above, that's definitely a queen wasp. One needs to eliminate it or else it'll start up a new colony somewhere, like your shed/garage/loft.
