Welcome to the internet, where everyone is an expert of a subject regardless whether they passed any exams after GCSE.
I was involved in the first 0.9r=1 thread on this forum, back around 2003. I can still remember someone (whose name I remember and who is still a member here) saying "I don't care what Hawking would say, I don't care if God himself came down and told me 0.9r=1, I know it doesn't". There's misplaced confidence and then there's flat out delusion.

LOL also the idea of trying to debate something like 0.9r=1 (for which there already exist proofs) is a bit silly.

IIRC someone argued in a previous thread that just because it was proved with maths doesn't make it true and that in the real world it was different to 1.

Sort of like this thread - the operator ÷ doesn't have an ambiguous meaning yet people are assuming it can and trying to debate that it does.

Who was it? :D

Another good line which someone came out with and which a friend (who used to be a member here and did maths with me) and I still laugh about was "Well what happens when you use all the 9's in the world!!". We imagine someone putting their hand up in a maths exam and saying "Excuse me, I've run out of 7s, can I have some more please?".

These sorts of thread are a bit like hacks and Fermat's Last Theorem (the statement, not the proof), its something which is within plenty of people's ability to comprehend but whether they understand it is another thing.

How many people in this thread could solve something like 4x'' - 3x' + x = 4cos(2t) ? Problems like that are infinitely more useful than arguing about a 'problem' defined by sloppy notation but calculus is something you have to put in time to understand. Everyone can understand the basic arithmetic involved in the original post and rather than invest time learning new stuff which they might not understand they spend that time arguing about something pointless. I've argued with plenty of physics/maths hacks over the years and its common for them to spend more time explaining why they won't answer a simple question than it would take to answer the question. Threads like this remind me of that sort of behaviour.

The poll results look inconclusive:p.

OP must be laughing:

Yeah, guilty as charged :( I was supposed to spend today learning how to use WebSockets, and instead of doing that I wasted hours on this bloody forum - again!

Are you the new incarnation of AlphaNumeric?

Are you not guilty of this yourself, in this very thread?

I'm feeling brave today.

1500 posts. One thousand, five hundred posts. In this thread.

Calling it right now because you guys just don't know when to stop.

Not going to happen. Thread is running out of steam. I'd give it 50 more posts before it drops to page 2 :p

I think your wife answered it several pages ago but it was ignored or refuted. Or do you mean the 0.9r one?

I'm not getting involved in the 0.9r malarky, I did that once before when I was drunk and made a total prat of myself....:D

Still, you live and learn..:)

I think I did as well. I was on the "no, it's not the same" side and I was wrong. Didn't stop me arguing the point before quietly making my excuses, heh.

But really, if I have one sandwich and then cut it in two ...
