Wiring woes

ny of you guys handy with wiring? I'm trying to replace the kitchen splotlights with one of those compact round fluroescent tubes for more light, but after fitting it to the ceiling I can't work out why it's not working.

The previous light has two mains cables to it, with the spotlights (as one) being wired with a shared earth, and both the live/neutral cables running to the same place.

I've tried doing the same with the new spotlight, using both lives, both neutrals and the ground they've combined, which works, but when it turns off the fuse trips. Also the switch is now the other way around, which I can't work out why. I've also tried just ignoring one of the cables and wiring it up, still using the same shared earth, but it doesn't work at all then.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I'm being careful with it all by the way, turning the fuse off whilst fiddling. Thanks.

You need a spare connector block - put the 2 blacks into this then use the 2 reds in the light fitting - one in the live and the other in the neutural.

Put the 2 reds together and the black with brown sleeving in the Live terminal and the Un-sleven black in the neutral terminal :)

Edit: sorry i ment put the two reds together in a seperate connector block not connected to anything else :)

MeEsH BaKkA is correct, 2 red in a connector block(permanently live), the black with brown sleeving in the live(switch wire) and the black in neutal, if your not confident or dont understand dont do it and get a professional in who is qualified and has part P :D

OK, I've just wired it thus:

- 2 reds & black with brown sleeving into Live
- 1 black un-sleven into Live

And it stays on, ignoring the switch! What's that about?!

Put a connector block on the reds on there own.

Put the black with brown sleving in the live terminal on the light.

Put the black into the neutral in the light on its own.

The 2 reds should be only connected together and nothing else.

Im a sparks, trust me :D

I keep saying it in here, But Electrical advise should be banned.

Being a electrician myself I always get to threads with loads of seriously bad advise being thrown about.

I have a tendency to agree, it can and does kill. If in any doubt, people really should ring a sparky!

I would say that mains electrical advice should be banned, but anything lower than 30V should be ok as voltages below this are very unlikely to kill.

I see a lot of stuff from the "it'll work" school, not so much from the "it's right" department.

Every time I come to one I normally end up letting out a loud sigh before trying to correct about 5 different folk :o.... unless you've got there before me :p

What about the thousands of DIY forums out there, should they be banned too?

If it involves electrical advice then yes, it's extremely dangerous no matter what people say. but that is after 3 years of H&S drummed into my head.

I have no problem with people attempting it if they know what they're doing and can safely isolate though.

I drew up what is going on so it's a doddle to understand
