Slight issue with P8:67 Deluxe

My old system was grinding to a halt especially during large renders... hence buying some new parts...

The P8P67 mobo, 2600K, 120Gb OCZ Vertex SSD plus 16Gb of G.Skill RipjawsX Ram (4 x 4Gb)

Put the pc together and turned it on, no smoke or fires so that was a good start. Unfortunately, the LED on the mobo is saying code 45 and the DRAM led is staying red. It then restarts after maybe a minute, with the DRAM led staying on still. The CPU led flashes briefly on and off as it tries to boot up, but the only light that stays on is the DRAM one.

PSU is a Corsair 620HX... was hoping to not have to replace that quite yet but will obviously if I have to :p

I have cycled the RAM through the different slots and also tried unplugging the HDDs from the SATA slots, just switching on with the GPU, CPU and RAM. Still no joy.

Any ideas? I hope its me just being dense :/

Code 45 is "Memory size checked".

I suggest you try 1 memory stick at a time in memory slot A2 which is the first light blue slot away from the processor and the one recommended by Asus for a single stick.

While you're at it also check that the following are plugged in and secure:

a) 24 pin power connector to motherboard

b) 8 pin power connector to motherboard

c) Any 6/8 pin connectors required by the graphics card

Did you make sure to put the motherboard standoffs in before installing the motherboard?
 
I shall do all of that now again just to double check.

The standoffs are the metal posts that lift the motherboard away from the case? In which case, yes I did... apologies, don't know what they are otherwise :/
 
I amaze myself sometimes at my detection skills ;)

Right, I have one 4Gb stick in the A2 slot and I no longer have the DRAM led light on.

I have power to my mouse etc

However the Q-code display after cycling through some numbers ends up on AE...
I have a dvd rom plugged in with a new copy of Windows 7 to install, along with two other hard drives which are needing to be formatted, but currently have Windows 7 from my old build.

Well done on working out the problem ;)

No idea what AE is.

Go into the BIOS and set the DVD ROM as the first boot device so that you can install Windows.

While you're in there set the drive mode on the Intel Controller to AHCI as you have an SSD. Unless you plan on setting up a RAID array on the HDD's in which case set it to RAID.

Disconnect the HDD's while you install Windows onto the SSD otherwise some install files will be put on them.

When yor reconnect the HDD's ensure they are connected to the Intel Controller as this is the best.

The SSD should be connected to an Intel SATA 6Gb/s port for best performance.

Thanks for that, have been going slowly crosseyed over the course of the evening. AE is a Legacy Boot Event apparently.

I am putting my OS on the SSD which is plugged into the 6gb port... I will setup the HDDs in RAID later on.

Also helps if I had the correct monitor plugged in ;)

Anywho, what does one do about the RAM situation? I would prefer to use all 16gb seeing as I paid for it... do I RMA or is there a fix? :/

Make sure the drive mode for the Intel Controller is set to RAID before you install Windows then you can add the HDD's in RAID after you've finished installing Windows onto the SSD.

Now you have it working you can manually set the speed, timings and voltage for the RAM in the BIOS. The settings will depend on exactly which RAM you bought.

Hopefully with the correct settings all 16GB will work.
 
Get windows installed with 1 stick and then you can try each RAM stick in turn to see if 1 is faulty. Once you've done this you'll be in a better position to work out if your issues are RAM or motherboard related (ie a faulty RAM socket)
 
Righty ho, been swamped with uni work unfortunately and not had much time to get on the PC.
I managed to get Windows working in the end with just 2 $Gb sticks in A1 + A2 slots.
Thought I would RMA the RAM, but before doing that just thought I would cycle through all of the RAM again, just to be sure as I wanted to be 100% sure :p
Big mistake.
PC is now not booting into Windows, isn't even getting as far as letting me try to get into BIOS... nothing appearing on screen.
Just get a solid RED DRAM light,Q-Code 30: tried MemOK, tried CMOS clear, single sticks of RAM in A2.
I now feel that it was the board acting funky in the first place and maybe the RAM was fine all along :/
Any ideas?
 
Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts?
Sorry to bump so soon, but I have to leave for a few days tomorrow and was hoping to be able to sort something before then, or at least be able to organise a RMA collection or something for when I return ;)

I double checked the RAM, just to be sure - at least they are as close to the same batch as I can ascertain... same month, year, looking at the what I think is the lot number I have # 4528234 and #4526041 - which is reasonably close.

I just booted up without any RAM, CPU light flashed on briefly, then PC powered down, then it powered up again, with a solid red DRAM light and a Q-Code 22.
Not quite sure what that code is yet, but will check up shortly.

Doing MemOK didn't seem to achieve much, DRAM light went on and off quickly and thats about, nothing appeared on screen at all :/
