I currently haev a BMW 1 Series (118D SE 3 Door) which is a lovely little motor, handles well smooth to drive but the work lease runs out July 2012 and I have decided to take the cash and buy a car. After reading reviews online it seems the VW Golf is still the best hatch back out there.

What I am looking for is something with at leas the same power as my current car with good MPG (143 BHP, 60MPG) and it seems that the VW Golf is a good choice.

For example the 2008 VOLKSWAGEN Golf 2.0 GT Sport TDI has the following specs

Fuel consumption (urban) 40.9 mpg
Fuel consumption (extra urban) 60.1 mpg
Fuel consumption (combined) 51.4 mpg
0 - 62 mph 9.3 seconds

My budget for a car will be around 10-12k. Whats the best diesel out there? for that price

Dont bother with the 170, its just a slightly bigger turbo than the 140 and has more lag.

You can save a lot of money and get a 2005-2006 Golf GT TDI with < 50k miles for 6k-7k. I've had mine two years, bought it for 8k with 41,000 on the clock. Great car, awesome mpg.

Not a fan of the Jetta.

Just came across this on autotrader

2007 VOLKSWAGEN Golf 2.0 GT Sport TDI 170 DPF (11k)

Fuel consumption (urban) 36.2 mpg
Fuel consumption (extra urban) 58.9 mpg
Fuel consumption (combined) 47.9 mpg

0 - 62 mph 8.2 seconds.

I drive 4 mile round trip from work so fuel is not a massive issue.

2007 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 2.0 GT TDI 5dr Diesel Hatchback (11k)

Fuel consumption (urban) 41.5 mpg
Fuel consumption (extra urban) 60.1 mpg
Fuel consumption (combined) 51.4 mpg
0 - 62 mph 9.3 seconds

If you do such a short journey, why buy a diesel and pay the premium?

What is your annual mileage though, it cant be much even with these figures?

I used to do a 120 mile a day commute and petrol still came out cheaper overall esp with servicing and initial purchase costs.

If the lease runs out in 2012, why are you looking now?

You might be able to get a decent Golf VI for that budget this time next year.. I'd hold out for that personally. It's much better than the V.

Lol, I missed that and read as 2011.

Not worth looking at now as prices will change and your circumstances could also, you may not even have a job, or have moved job/home etc etc.

Golf 2.0 GTI or a GT would be suitable for what you want. No real need to go for diesel but then there is nothing wrong if that is your preference.

Have you considered a Skoda VRs as better value for money?
