Hi guys looking for something nippy for the summer, only want to spend about £5000 and been looking at cars like this - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2736963.htm

for some reason they are very cheap for my to insure, less then £1000 for the year, An St220 is more then that!!

Any advise? I know they drink, and I know parts ain't cheap but doing repairs wont be a problem as I know about 10 trustworthy mechanics

I dont want a Subaru or an Evo, insurance is too much and dont like the image/theft rate

That's a B5.

I was tempted by a A6 2.7T which has the same lump but the healthy possibility of big bills put me off. I think they've got a habit of eating turbos at around about this age and that's a front end off, engine out job, and unless your 10 mechanics REALLY like you that's going to be some money ;).

For that value, have a look at the Galant vr4, its a twin turbo 4wd too but quite reliable. Insurance can be very cheap.

Its a b5 lol shows how little i know about them :(

only ever been a passenger in one and loved it

and is it deffo engine out for the turbos? as Ive read on a few places they like to eat them

I think I've heard of one or two mental, mental people with girl hands doing it without but realistically you've got to whip the lump out.

Of course some people see the turbos going as a bit of an opportunity. Whip the engine out, slap on some K04 turbos, put it back in, add a remap and a few other bits and pieces then enjoy. The thought of touching 500bhp in some old Audi is pretty cool .

Are they as expensive to run as say an e39 m5, I would be planning on keeping it for a year and using it on a daily basis

dont know if its of interst but theres a very good example available from svag(club i'm a member of)

www.scottishvag.net

sites down atm but have a look at the for sale section, very tidy s4 for 5k or more if you wish(depends on what options you want the seller to include) and i can personally vouch for this car being of a very very high standard sellers name is Mark hunter goes by the name of confusionhunter on the site give it a look if your serious about an S4

It won't be as expensive, but that doesn't mean it'll be cheap either.

The turbos can be changed with the engine i situ, but I have only heard of MRC tuning that'll do it like that. Cars with 100k+ miles might be on their second set anyway.

The b5 has a complicated front suspension setup that needs replacing after around 70k miles. That isn't cheap and can take a good few hours to change them all.

On the plus side they are solid, well made cars.
