I was wondering if there was a state that your computer could be in (e.g. Hibernate, sleep, standby etc.) where your torrents were still downloaded and saved, but you don't have to have the fans, lights and graphics card fans going all night... Is this possible?

Would be nice if it supports torrent, emule and Newsgroups.

there was a thing on my old mobo called ASUS AI Nap which claimed to turn off all components that were not being used and could theoretically download whilst everything else was off

BUT, the problem was that a lot of people reported that becuase the fans werent active, the temps shot up - so i didnt ever use it...

I think some routers can download torrents without a PC being on - mine doesn't so cannot speak from experience.

Belkin have a feature that claims to do just that - http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app...3745/~/how-to-set-up-torrent-genie*-(play-max)

and according to OcUK's description, this router comes with it: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-127-BE&groupid=46&catid=1596&subcat=

Like I said, can't speak from experience as I'm on Linksys but might be worth a shot if it's what you're after.

EDIT: Actually, the router I linked to doesn't mention the torrent genie thing on Belkin's site, but this one does: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-130-BE&groupid=46&catid=1596&subcat= so might be a mistype on the OcUK description for the first one I linked to and it doesn't have the feature.

Not exactly what you asked but uTorrent gives you the option to hibernate or shut down when downloads are complete, so if your only downloading a small file it'll turn off quite quickly.

Not sure about other sofware though.

Yeah I was just surprised no ones designed a tiny box that can have a web browser interface or apps that u can access and it allows nzb/emule/torrents to download to a 2.5 sata 1tb hdd.....

It would certainly be better then running a powerful high wattage/noisy/hot pc running 24/7 :)

I guess people have just gone down the mitx build route ? and just made a tiny mini itx pc to do all the hardwork....

urmm, is the only reason for torrents pirating things? i didnt think you guys would take such a calm reaction to something like this :D but there may be a good legal use of utorrent aswell :P

torrents are used to send/receive data in most cases, to a large number of people; the content doesn't have to infringe copyright laws.

Material in the public domain or copyrighted material which permits free distribution (e.g. software under the GNU GPL for example) can be torrented legally.

BitTorrent is just a protocol. It makes no difference as to whether or not you infringe copyright by using torrents or by using Rapidshare or by buying an unauthorised copy off the street or get a copy from a friend. BitTorrent in and of itself is not illegal, but it can be used for illegal purposes.

Somewhat like a kitchen knife. Kitchen knives aren't illegal. You can chop cucumber and carrots up for a salad with a kitchen knife and it's legal. Stabbing someone randomly with it or hold up a store, and it's illegal. In either case, it's not the kitchen knife that's illegal, it's the act of randomly stabbing someone or holding up a store.

Perfect example
