VW Golf

I retract my previous comment as I can't really see the decent Golf VIs dropped to this price by next year.

However, I still wouldn't sink this much into a Golf V, regardless of its solid residuals.
Octavia is definitely something to think about.

Volvo C30 is worth a look too if it's not too small.

Just came across this:

http://www.d-g-autos.co.uk/used-cars/volkswagen-golf-2-0-gt-tdi-170-5dr-st-andrews-201106379042726

VOLKSWAGEN Golf 2.0 GT TDI 170

Year/Reg:2007 (56)
Mileage:56,000

Fuel consumption (urban) 36.2 mpg
Fuel consumption (extra urban) 58.9 mpg
Fuel consumption (combined) 47.9 mpg
0 - 62 mph 8.2 seconds
Top speed 137 mph
Engine power 170 bhp

Also comes fully with all the mods I would need:
Climate Control,
Full Service History,
Remote locking,
Cruise control, ABS,
Air conditioning,

When I get a car its going to last me a good few years (hence the 5 door for when the Mrs has kids). I would like to get something with a little less mileage on the clock but I think I found the model I want.

If you like the 1 series so much why not get a newer 1 series?

Surely a Golf is step down in quality, image and refinement? Don't get me wrong I like Golfs but I have always classed the 1 series as "a tier above" the Golf.

If you are bored of a 1 Series I doubt a Golf is going to excite you after the initial 2 weeks of 'Its different' fades away.

I love driving my 1 series, the power ,smoothness etc, just had it from new as a lease and the shape bores me more than anything..

Edit: Of course there is the BMW 123d SE with a 0-60 in under 7 seconds..

You'd think so wouldn't you? Especially with Audi > VW, yet for some messed up reason VW think they are BETTER than Audi (words uttered by their sales manager). Audi are generally seen on par with BMW, so we can deduce that VW are believing they are > BMW.

These are crazy times. Every car manufacturer has totally lost the plot and charging whatever the hell they want for inferior products.

Makes sense......

The golf is a nice enough place to be but unless you go for the Golf GTI, Octavia VRs (petrol), Focus ST or BMW 130i end of the market then to be honest there is very little in this price and car bracket to excite. The 123d being imo the best choice of the medium sized hatch diesels.

Mundane lower power hatches all deliver the mundane experience to the max……..100% dis-satisfaction guaranteed.

Went to a VW Dealership on Monday to look at a Golf and came across the vw Scirocco. As the dealership was dead on Monday I got a test drive a 170BHP Scirocco GT TD and I want one now. Screw the golf this is far better looking and its nipper than my 1 series.

And it doesnt look like that.

And it costs more than £10k.

Have you considered a Ferrari F430? Thats also better looking than a Golf.
