Howdy chaps.

I'm currently looking for a BMW 330 Ci (M) Sport. I have a budget of 10k. What is out there?

I might settle for a 325 Ci, but I'd prefer a 330.

I'm doing around 16k miles a year.

I may be wrong but aren't the 325i and the 330i the same engine? They return exactly the same MPG and they're both in the same tax band, so you'd be mad to settle for a 325!

I'm pretty sure the 325 is a 2.5l engine and the 330 is a 3.0l engine. It is in the E46 and that's pretty much where my budget will put me.

No, the 325i has an M54B25 and the 330i has an M54B30.

This, however, is completely true - there is simply no reason to purchase the 325Ci with this budget. This is surely top whack for a 330Ci Sport and therefore you should be able to get quite a nice one.

I'd be after one of the few remaining lovely one owner from new private sale examples, personally.

There are a plethora of things which can and will go wrong with a 330Ci but few if any will cost 4 figures in one go so you can probably just self-warranty it by keeping a grand on standby in the bank.

In looking for a service history is a full BMW history mandatory? What year should I be looking at?

I'm going to open a massive can of worms here but I'd want full BMW History - you are looking for a car where the owner has never explored any avenue of saving money. So you want 4 top end tyres, full BMW history, etc etc.

You will be able to get a very good E46 330i with 10k...

My dad has one and pretty much everything that can go wrong has gone wrong so I've fixed quite a lot on it..

Common and expensive things to watch for:

Fuel Pump, Cam Shaft Position Sensors (Very Common..), Heater Fan, PS Pump, Oil Level Sensor, Auto Gearboxes, Bushes (Rear End Clunk), Electric Window Mechanisms and Rattly VANOS.

Apart from that, Epic car!

What are your thoughts on BMW approved used Mr Fox?

A fantastic warranty. This is pretty much the main benefit. You've as much chance of getting a pristine car as you have anywhere else, they don't seem to cherry pick stock based on cosmetic condition.

The biggest problem I seem to be having is finding one within 120 miles of here.

Is there any advice on how to search on pistonheads as it seems to return based on the whole string put into their filtering by title, rather than looking for individual words?

Autotrader has a couple near here, but they either don't mention service history, have too many previous owners or the advert seems to suggest it's been ragged.

Is there any particular year I should be looking at?

The facelift was 2003 on an 03 plate. Facelift cars get a new front end, LED rear lights and a 6 speed gearbox. Make sure you get one with the widescreen navigation system at this sort of budget.

In 2005 they renamed Sport to M Sport but there were no changes at all - just a new name.

Excellent. I knew there was a facelift. Thanks mucker!

At some point - late 03 I think - the navigation system moved from being CD based to DVD based. The Mk4 systems with DVD's are MUCH better. It's a £400ish upgrade if you have a CD based system.

You will likely get a car newer for your budget, but bear in mind that the paint corrosion warranty increased from 6 years to 12 years on cars registered on or after 01/01/2004.
