Was looking at the Coolermaster Silent Pro 1000W, it seems to have positive feedback, and I'd call the price reasonable. But I don't know much about PSUs, so any recommendations welcome!

Also, what's the differences between 80plus Bronze/Silver/Gold PSUs?

Thanks for any help :D

Hi there,

May I ask what spec system you are planning to run, do you reckon you will really need 1000W?

As for 80plus bronze, sliver, gold and platinum - this is the efficiency rating. It's good to have an efficient unit - but it isn't the only measure of quality when looking at PSUs (other metrics include voltage regulation, ripple suppression, heat under load and noise). Have a look at this review site to see many PSUs tested very thoroughly.

Cheers mate, I'll read up on 'em :D

1000w psus are overkill for pretty much any pc really, surely an 850w would be better?

Eventually going SLi OC 580s, those alone I thought might be pushing it for an 850 when I considered the rest of the specs. I'd feel safer with a 1000w.

basically efficiency is rated in 80+/Bronze/Silver/Gold and platinum

platinum being currently the best.

Ah, power efficiency. Not sure why I didn't think of that

Cheers mate :D

Well they are less power hungry than the previous GTX480 cards which needed 900w+ PSU's for SLI.

GTX580 sli is ok on 850w PSU's unless you got loads of lights/fans/HDD's etc?

EVGA soc GTX 580, i5 2500k that I plan on overclockings to around 4.4/4.8'ish under a Noctua d14 (more to do with hot enviroment than hot hardware, again, I'd just feel safer with it), 8GB 1600 DDR3. So not buying a second 580 immediately, but will towards the end of the year.

And thanks for the info, I'll have a good read :D

If I was going sli 580's, although a 850W PSU would be fine, id go for 1000W just so I can whack in loads of fans etc. Those things will make that rig almost hot enough to stone bake a pizza in there so it might be worth it.

Probably gonna go with a HAF X case, so I may get one or two additional fans to go with those already on the case, but I've never filled the 200GB HDD on my old PC, so I'll never fill the 1TB I'm picking up, so just 1 HDD. No lights, going for practicality, not fussing over looks .

BUT! as excessive as it may be, the mobo I'm looking at supports tri-SLi, and while I can't see myself ever pushing beyond two GPUs, I may change my mind down the road a bit, so I'm just trying to plan ahead.

That said, judging by some reactions here, I understand that I might be overlooking just how powerful 1000w is. I assumed everyone running SLi 580s with an overclocked CPU was running a 1000w PSU?

So yeah, as above, not many additional extras, very slight possibility of going Tri-SLi, but more than likely won't exceed 2 GPUs. 850w looking more reasonable?

Meaning you want a PSU that exceeds by a fair margin the combined power-usage of all the parts?

As in, while a 850w might be enough, if it's only just enough, it'll be running full-whack, which isn't good, right?

Thats right.

The PSU fan will be running full whack trying to keep itself cool, also efficiency suffers above 70%

What a beast! I'll read up on it. Price definately seems fair considering the price of some 1000w PSUs.

So, taking everything on board, I think I'll be better off with a 1000w or above PSU, just incase I may require a bit more power down the road a bit.

I'll look into the recommendations posted, cheers! :D
