Canon Rumors said:
There’s word that Canon is sending out test bodies of the next 5D to various key photographers. Obviously they’ll be under a veil of secrecy. Once this happens, we tend to start getting better information.

I can almost feel the FFFUUUUUU's coming from people who have just shelled out for a 5DII

Am i being my usual confused self in thinking that the AF on the 5DII is not as quick as it could be?, if so I hope the third incarnation will turn it into the swiss army knife it appears to want to be. :)

well i guess it makes sense for canon to have something in the wings, apparently nikon are going to be making a d800 soon so im sure canon want something to compete with the upcoming nikon.

And ruin sales of the 1ds Mk3? The 5d Mk3 will probably just have an uprated sensor and other tweaks...

Not really...look at what else a 1 series offers besides the awesome AF.

Dual card slots
Full weather sealing
Built in grip
Higher FPS

That's all I can think of (I'm on the train and it's early and the person next to me has bad breath so give me a break :p)

There is definately a Market for a 1D even if the 5D does have massively improved focusing system, which IMO it really does need and cannot go without if they want to stay in the market.

It won't have built in grip. Unless they bring out a 3D.

Better weather sealing would be easy though, like the 7D.

Dual card slot is reserved for the 1D I think.

All I really Wang is better AF.

You too are on the train aren't you ;) :p

Even the prosumer level D7000 has dual card slots.

As talked in the other thread, the Nikon D700 has all the important pro features of the D3 like weather sealing, dual card slots.
Canon has had several years to catch up...;)

This is my point, this is why I'm certain the 5D3 will be a considerable improvement if anything to keep up with competition.

Yes the current 5D2 produces outstanding images, nobody is denying that but its competition offers a lot more.

Looks like what I said years ago may happen too which is to merge the 1D class into one super expensive body lol.

It wouldnt put me off buying a 5D mark II now so I wouldnt let it put off anyone else either. £1500 is a bargain for a 5DII and be assured the mark 3 will come in at 1k more.

I tend to agree that I think Canon will have to up the game. I think we have already seen this. Nikon Offered the D300 crop camera with the pro level focusing and a full weather sealed mag-alloy body. With Canon you had to get an 1DMkIII (non S) to get a 1.3X crop - an excellent camera by all means but forcing you to use FF lenses and a big body. Canon has now released the 7D to meet, and somewhat exceed the D300, giving pro level focusing etc. in an APS-C crop body. I think for the 5DMKII it will have to have the same focusing system as the 7D at least.

This is an important point. Some people think the new 5D and the D700 replacements will be cheap, as in the same prices as the current retail for these bodies.

Wrong, the retail price will be the launch price of the 5DMKII or D700 + 10-15% inflation/falling yen/tsunami disaster increases, about 3500USD.

Been saving up for a 7D but I think I might just carry on saving up until we see the prices of the Mk3, then the mk2 prices should drop hopefully depending on how much the mk3 is

Just to point out - the D700 doesn't have dual card slots. The D7000 is the first Nikon below pro level to have dual *identical* card slots, the D300s got a compactflash and SD combo which I regard as far less useful. It's nice they put it on the D7000 but I can't see it changing anyone's buying decisions.

@Shark
It comes in very handy if your shooting weddings (or other important events), basically you can have a couple of 64gb cards in raid1, so you have a backup at all times. This means you don't have to keep switching cards, and also don't have to worry about losing any of the cards, and also as your using high density nand, you don't have to worry about losing a whole wedding because a card went down, and don't have the hassle of keep changing out 4-8gb cards.

I use it exactly that way for commercial work with a D3s, however I don't see that utility converting down to lower end bodies so much.

Cards are pretty reliable, I'm fairly careful with mine and replace them fairly frequently and I've never had one fail. For anything important they're on a laptop and external drive in 90 minutes or so anyway. I only bother with dual cards because those photos are often expensive to create so any precaution against data loss is worthwhile and it's there.

I guess it'd be welcome on the 5D / D700 line but I don't think it'd sway anybodies buying decision. On a 1D / D3 it's definitely expected of course. I'd quietly argue that if it was me, if the photos were that important I'd be shooting a D3s/D3x anyway... (hence I hire those bodies for commercial stuff).

The only thing I want from the 5DIII is more cross af points, better af point distribution and better tracking. An extra fps would be nice but the current 4 is fine for me. If it gets improved af then I will buy one immediately it's released.
