Hi guys,

With the constant rise of fuel costs, taxes and insurance i am considering getting a cheap scooter, 125cc bike or something similar.

I have held my car licence for 5 years (2005) and was wondering what steps do i need to take and what bikes, mopeds etc am i entitled to ride?

Can certain scooters be taken on the motorway and what are some good makes of bikes etc? engine size?

Or am i better passing my full bike test and going from there and how difficult is it?

Thanks,

Shep.

Start off with your CBT (Compulsory Basic Training). This is a day course and costs around £100. This will allow you to ride up to a 125cc for two years before you have to do the CBT again. With this you won't be allowed on the motorway until you pass your full license.

I would recommend a geared 125 and not bothering with a scooter. Ride around on the 125 for a while to gain some confidence and you can then go for your full bike test. As for bikes to get, if you stick with Honda you won't go wrong.

Hiya,

Well i'm not fussed about riding a motorbike yet. I'm 23 have a an old mini, me and my girlfriend share a new car and i travel to work with my father.

I just want something that is cheap. I have been on geared bikes off road before and found it good fun but like i said i'm not too fussed and would probably get my girlfriend insured on the bike so i could use the car some days if need be and she coulod use the bike/scooter.

I like the old lambretta scooters but also like cagiva geared bikes.

You need to decide if you want a bike as a hobby / interest or if its just cheap transportation.

If its the former, then passing your bike test would make sense.

If its the latter I'd go for a 125 Scooter - more practical, cheaper to run and better weather protection.

Either way you'll need to do a CBT.

Do the CBT first, and then decided what you want to do.

If you decide you want a 125 bike, get something Japanese, they're pretty much bombproof.
