covert films so i can watch them on my xbox 360

hi,

What is the best software out there so i can convert my films (mkv,avi,dvi x and ect) so i can play them on my xbox 360 via my pc on the network.

I like and use handbrake for converting from one format to another. Has some handy preset outputs too.

Just been looking though for something to rip my dvd library. But if you already have them as avi/mkv etc then handbrake.

Do you have Windows 7?

If so add your 360 as a media extender in Windows Media Centre, install the DivX Codec (http://www.divx.com/ - download the bundle, untick everything else) install AC3 filter (http://ac3filter.net/projects/ac3filter/releases)

...and you're good to go for Streaming mkv files, everything else should just stream by default.

Frapple's solution is much easier and I can also vouch for it. Just wish WMP12 would come to Vista.
