When life hands you a steaming poo...

ask your boss to send you an email with the reasons why you didnt get it, then you have the age discrimination in writing, then you can take advice from an employment solicitor, if he just said it to you, you wont win anything

Sounds more like the already knew who they wanted for the position and just had to do the whole interview/tests for it to be above board and your boss has just given you the first excuse thats come into his head...

I just cant see such an agency use the age card - unsure what to advise if your unwilling to ask the normal post-interview questions to ascertain why you missed out, no doubt age will never get mentioned...

nah moomoo, this boss isn't kind at the best of times, if you knew him you would think differently. He's a tough man, but he's fair. He wouldn't blink the slightest at not giving me the job, and this is why i was so shocked when he grabbed me in the canteen for a quiet word today. He basically told me I had massively impressed at the interview, which a certain person said i shouldn't have been allowed through for, but he wanted me to have the experience, and i relaly impressed, but still the person has made massive issues about my age etc etc

oh sorry i forgot to mention the results are not official yet... i was expecting them by the end of week but he grabbed me today, told me what happened, and said this was a conundrum, because they had already decided i was to young before the interviews but decided to give me experience and test me, but then i topped the interview. He said he wanted me, the stick in the mud stick is insisting i'm too young, not experienced enough, etc etc

I'd get legal advice as to the likely remedies that may be available to you should you pursue this in court rather than do nothing at all.

you may find that there could be richer rewards for actually taking them to court rather than sitting back and being the department female dog for the next several years.

They've probably given the job to a friend /relative / fellow golf-club member despite the fact you're the best candidate.
Unfortunately this happens a lot, I've seen utter muppets promoted to really high levels because they have the 'contacts'.

well what the hell is experience if i came first in the interview? My boss is not to blame here, he has fought my corner, its' the head of personnel...

I have been categorically told that I topped the interviews, the guy closest to me is 34, but unfortunatley the rules are the rules and as such I wont get the job? How can you outperform people with more years under them, in the aspects required for a position, and then still be turned down on the basis that you dont have enough experience?
I can answer any question my bosses ask me and there's nothing stopping me from giving them the answer of what they want to hear. I am just unable to show any experience with being in certain roles. Don't take it personally and get on with your life.

Sorry but reading the thread, if you are not being considered for a post which they interviewed you for, then it sounds like you were never a potential candidate in the first place, and your boss pulled some strings to get you interview experience, when there was no potential chance of you being considered for the post.

Todays chat was his way of either letting you down gently, or letting you know the interview was purely for experience. If 'someone' on the appointments panel already stated that you shouldn't have even been there, then 'she' no matter how much of a bitch is probably right, and the fact you were there and made it through shortlisting was purely due to someone pulling favour/rank.

You work sounds like mass amounts of quango consulating in europe, nice work if you can get it, sounds like our tax-pounds are eaten by such committees and departments. Out of interest, does your work benefit the people?

Apply tomorrow but add that you are now older than your prior application so are more suitable and should be reconsidered.

Well I'd wait until the results are made official so nothing seems underhand, and then email/get in writing reasons for not getting the job, and an analysis of your interviews from whoever is in charge of that decision. Then just see what comes back.
