Ok ok, I know there have been a few threads on this but for the life of me, I can't seem to gauge a good route. We are going for two weeks over Christmas.

There are 4 of us, the options are:

Hire an RV with the occassional hotel stop.
Hire a Chrysler Voyager or similar and hotel stop all over.

So, things to plan are:

What route (Fox, can you help here?)
Where to stay
What to see
Quickets / Maximum impact holiday (see much, travel little)

Hoping you can all help :)

Ok, so would you actually bother with LA or would you just head straight out to SD?

Also, I guess Tioga pass is out of the question, given that this will be December. Is there a nice around route to still get to Yosemite?

If you've never been to LA then you've kinda got to tick the box. It's reasonably easy to do because the flights and car hire deals are usually best to/from LA. You'll land in the afternoon, go to a hotel and crash. Then your bodyclock will wake you up at 4-5am. Perfect for an early breakfast and an early drive through Beverely Hills up to Mullholland Drive for the tourist-style photos and Hollywood sign viewing. Then you can hit the freeway and be in San Diego for lunch.

Get one of those Cadillac Escalade jobbers, very comfy for 4 people thats what we rented :)

They always seem to be absolutely bonkers money - bonkers as in you can hire a Corvette for half the price!

They wanted 5 times the price of my Mustang cab for an Escalade..

I cant even remember how much it was now we had one in Vegas and one in NY, NY was cheaper i think it was 700 quid a week or something, seriously comfy car though, i love em in a rubbish sort of American car way :)

1. Rent 2x Mustangs (I paid £160 for 7 days in one last November).
2. Follow Fox' route (I did, it's epic).
3. ????
4. Profit:

We don't want two seperate cars as part of the fun is to share the time with the 4 of us together, not in two seperate cars.

Looking around, we can get an Escalade for £900 for two weeks.

I'm doing a two part US trip in a few weeks going to Atlanta/Mephis/Nashville/Smokey Mountins then I'm doing

LA -> Monterey -> San Fran -> Nappa -> Yosemite -> Vegas

for yosemite I found these to stay in which look pretty cool

Fox (or anyone else) - got any recommendations on places to stay in LA or Monterey ? or things to see do ?

also did you have any trouble with getting luggage in the back of the mustang I hired one before and remember the boot being quite big for a cab but I never tried sticking two large cases in it

Get it, thats cheap and its arm chairs your sitting in.

I would say stop at Laguna beach before San San Diego, lovely place and only an hour from LA.

Not when you can get x2 convertible stangs for about £800!

As long as they arn't hard cases and more like large holdalls then you should be fine. We had x1 large Eastpack suitcase holdall, x1 large sprots holdall, x1 hand luggage and a crate of corona in the boot of the stang, it really is very impressive.

I'm still a lazy boy for not doing my USA trip thread, going to start writing it now :D

The boot isn't huge - you can really wedge stuff in though (there is a seperate compartment for the roof, so don't need to be careful of blocking that).

If there are only 2 of you, the back seats are fine. Me and a mate got 2x hand luggage, 2x big holdalls in the back of one without too much issue.

One of the girls in the party, wait, the only other girl in the party, thinks the route Fox did is too far.

She thinks we should do something like this and "hang around LA a bit more"

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&s...ed+States+to:Las+Vegas,+NV+to:Los+Angeles,+CA

:(

So far, I'm not sure she's realised there's only 200 miles or so difference in her route to my (Foxs) route. In addittion, I verbatim read to her Fox's paragraph on LA from his road trip post :)

What they gonna do maintain contact by walkie talkie :D Its a 4 some holiday, women with luggage wanting to yack, there is only one vehicle for the job, anyway them Cadillac have a big sunroof :)

It's about time you polished your man balls and got them out. Tell her where to get off, stupid woman :D

She hasn't got a clue about LA, all women want to hang aroudn there like Lauren off teh stupid 'Hills' show. What they don't realise is that LA is pretty much a dump and all these fancy Hollywooders instead hang around Beverly Hills, Laguna Beach etc etc.

Tell her that many people who have actually been say this and she needs to realise that LA is crap. My GF wanted 2.5 days in LA but that would mean we wouldn't have been able to do Death Valley, Yosemite and San Fran tbh, she soon realised how wrong she was after we had done said amazing parts of the trip.

LA is a day MAX, but as Fox has mentioned better to just drive around see Hollywood sign etc then leave. Also, for your final night, stay in Santa Monica. 15mins drive from the airport (much closer and quicker than Hollywood) and is a wonderful place by the coast. Plenty of places to eat, drink and shop (tell her that bit ;))

Hell ye :D

Just making a point that you can get 2 much better cars for less than the price of an overpriced Escalade. I'm sure there are other cars to consider, especially at that price!
