**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

Would anyone recommend the brady guide book if you are a complete noob to this game?, was thinking of getting the game now its dropped in price.

Yeah it's an exellent book.

Obviously some of the unit stats will be out of date as it's always being updated, but it's an exellent book, worth every penny.

Haha i got this for a friend for his birthday as a bit of a joke present. It's really nicely presented and has some decent info in it (anything with WhiteRa commenting in it can't be bad :D), but honestly there are better ways to learn the game :p.

You won't become 'good' at SC2 by reading a book, all it can do is tell you the basics, which can be learned through practice and talking to other people (such as the fine folk on this very forum).

Going through the campaign will teach you the basic units and control, then going on to multiplayer you'll start to learn more specifics. There are some awesome players who post on here, across all races, who have always been happy to offer great advice to people.

So if you do buy starcraft 2 and have an interest in getting into multiplayer, the best way to do it is by playing with and talking to other people. Post replays for advice, ask questions when you have problems, etcetc..

One thing I would say though is I've encountered a couple people who have expected that picking up the game, looking at some strategy guides and playing a few games will automatically make them good players. Not only is this an incorrect perspective to take, it can also be very disheartening when you dont improve. Getting good at starcraft takes time and effort, but it can be a incredibly fun and rewarding experience when you find that you've improved your game :).

My experience as a newbie: I came in new to the more competitive multiplayer RTS scene with a passing interest in the SC2 beta. Over a year later and I'm still by all considerations terrible at this game, but I'm still learning more and more and continuing to improve. As far as I'm concerned, as long as I'm still enjoying the game, I'll keep playing it :D

i got placed in gold but after a massive loss streak im in bronze now : /
im playing zerg, coming up against lots of cheese, cannon rush is most popular
lost to a drone rush in one game last night... 12 workers fighting my 10 workers : (
i win most games when i get past 100 food

Having seen gold + silver i can say the game is a lot more fun at this level, than at bronze.
But in bronze i am slowly getting better at recognizing cheese/scouting etc

Don't worry, cheese is very common even in higher leagues, but once you know how to defeat it,you get easy and fast wins :).

I GOT PROMOTED! I am now a gold player!

Got a chuckle from my division name, "SCV Uncle".

Also got my 100 wins, a promotion and a new portrait, what a night!

I've also decided never to 4gate again, especially with this new patch coming up, I've decided to start practising early aggression more, zealot/stalker, 3 gate push etc.

One thing I've also kind of discovered is just how valuable upgrades are, quite liking 2 gate robo with early harassment and then a forge and expand.

Congrats! :D

Good policy on not 4 gating. I would definitely recommend playing around with a 3 gate expand with a simultaneous zealot/sentry push in PvZ. It's hilarious how much rage I get from zerg players who just don't bother to defend and instantly die on the first push :p. I'd post some of the more amusing things i've been called, but..this is a family friendly forum ;).

Fair enough, but what do you do when the opponent 4gates with a proxy pylon just by your ramp? I tried not 4gating for a night and lost almost every PvP (although it might've also been because i am not practised at alternatives)

3 gate/2 gate robo (day9/tyler style) defence? I've not actually tried the robo defence myself, but I've had a lot of success with the 3 gate defence. At the end of the day yea it's down to the pylon (and how terrible your opponent is). But it's very possible to defend :).

EDIT: I appreciate that being said that it's totally map dependent though, some maps you would be in big trouble if you didnt 4 gate but your opponent did :D.

Played a TvP last night where the P built a pylon right on my ramp preventing me doing the usual wall-off. I sent 4 SCVs to attack it but it still finished, and by the time it was down I had a zealot in my base from a proxy gateway. Proceeded to lose as I only had a couple of marines out at the time. Any ideas on how to defend this? Zealots own so many SCVs it isn't funny, so even if you manage to kill them off and complete the wall off you're so far behind I reckon its gg.

If you see a proxy gateway, don't take gas,get 2 rax and maybe a bunker.Micro is also required and if you do it correctly without losing too many scv's/marines then you will probably win easily. After his attack fails, you can either expand or marine scv allin him,he will not have any units to defend.

Yeah problem is I didn't see the proxy gateway, only the zealot running into my base. It's hard to scout every location they might have hidden something in time.

Same with proxy DTs or stargates I guess. This is my biggest issue in TvP at the moment - beating the first push that comes at the 6-7 min mark. As it can be any of voids, DTs or a 4 gate. Generally if they go for an early expo I'm OK as I just match it.

Well against protoss, you should be able to scout for a long time - their first unit which can kill a well managed scouting SCV is the stalker/sentry, and they both require a cybernetics core + building time. If they have a lot of chrono and only 1 gas, it's probably 4gate.

lol - thought I would have 90mins or so to play last night and get back into it. some 1 v 1's expecting to get at least 3 or 4 or 5 games played

1hr 10 mins later after a single T v T game + numb fingers etc.

Was fairly epic - i probably should have won, but it was back and forth all the time between us, but my late game sucks big time. Most games that go past about 20/25 mins i tend to lose badly. Expanding is not to much of an issue, and also upgrading etc is ok, but my unit composition is rubbish and my mirco is awful!!!

Wow... 70 minutes on 1 game :-/ I would've thought the minerals would have run out after half that game!

First of all: this. I'm much better at hit and run guerilla tactics and ending the battle soon. I always, without fail, lose if the battle goes on too long against a human opponent. I haven't taken the game online yet though :D

Hi folks - new to the game (had it a few days) but I've picked it up reasonably well so far. I have an experienced friend teaching me the ropes, and while my strategies are solid, my macro is a bit crap :D

You think 70 minutes is bad? I had a free for all with my friend who's better at end game than me, mixed in with some hard and very hard AIs (8 of us) that went on for over 2 hours :D I was mentally drained after that one, and still lost :D
