Anyone know what the contact limit is on the iphone 3gs?

I have a business user, with 19k contacts, and trying to sync with itunes, to take 2 hours, only for no contacts to get synched on to the phone.

I tried a smaller amount and it worked.

So it seems 19k contacts is too much.

Edit*

Works on blackberry by the way.

Jesus...19...THOUSAND?!

The most I've ever heard of

Is he syncing any other data? Like music and photos? Have you tried just contacts?

How much space does the contacts take up out of curiosity?

Although I apologise, for this does not help you at all!

Although this may help - https://discussions.apple.com/message/6723782?messageID=6723782

Has the user tried using Exchange cached mode? :)

For that many contacts I'm shocked it's not being done through Exchange as opposed to syncing directly from a desktop client. Even if he is on his own there are various hosted Exchange accounts he could use.

Yep, I was simply trying to synch contacts from itunes to phone.

No idea how much space it takes, but phone would take 2 hours synching, only to finish and for contact book to be empty.

So Im trying to find out what the max number is.

Must be running on exchange? no?

In that case use exchange cached mode, I remember doing an experiment with my phone once, added about 4 exchange accounts from different companys, so grand total of contacts must've been....a lot...picked them all up without issue.

Company I work for runs all linux servers, no Exchange!

Any of the corporate Google setups viable? Syncing through the cloud is the only realistic way with so many contacts rather than sitting at a computer like a turnip for that long. :p

I imagine he's syncing from Outlook Express or an equivalent desktop app where all the contacts are stored which may be synced from one of the linux servers. Problem is they can't sync directly to the iPhone over the air so he has to cable up each time.

Ah right...issue then :(

I just read of an iPhone running on a very old firmware with 12,000 contacts. How many have you tried? 15k? You said you tried a smaller amount...

2 hours does seem like a long time if its doing just contacts, have you tried restoring the phone with the latest firmware and gone from there?

In that case then I would go for Google contacts as suggested, doubt there will be a limit on that and it'll keep up to date via push notifications etc.

Even better Google stuff can be setup using Exchange ActiveSync, so you get the benefits without the cost.:p

If the business has that many contacts I believe it's time for a rethink on contact management.

No exchange so not doable, unless I've misunderstood what exchange activesync is? :) (I'm going by the name lol)

Hmm, I dont think my boss would like the idea of cloud based contact synchs.

The contacts we are talking about are highly confidential, so I dont think cloud synching is going to get approved.

Try 10,000 contacts.

Or alternatively if you have lots of linux servers there could you use VM to run an exchange server for this purpose? assuming you already have VM setup that is the cost will be minimal and just take some time really.

Although, can I ask, how are contacts currently managed? I'm intrigued...

Google paid for the rights to use ActiveSync so if you have a Gmail account you can set it up for push connectivity. If they could move contacts to Google, they should be able to get the iPhones connected this way.

The same way you can use it for Hotmail accounts, wheras before clients were stuck with POP access. :)

Also, is it a personal iPhone or given by the company? Does it have a passcode enabled? Is it set to wipe itself with too many failed attempts? Every current endpoint needs security before the boss worries about Google. :)
