New Yorks New Taxi

i just got back from nyc....while sitting at a back of a yellow taxi i asked the guy the specs of the car he then turned around and said.....3 litre v8, but this is nothing most taxies are 4 litre v8's....I just looked at him as if he lost the plot lol. If i was a taxi driver in nyc id stick with a 1 litre to save my fuel lol.
 
or in this case a mini van disguised as a taxi. For such a big contract it just seems totally underwhelming and not very ambitious at all, I'd be very disapointed if they swapped the London Cab for a generic mini van and used a manufacturers claim of 30 mpg as part of the justification.

going by us gallons thats 36mpg in our MPG not that great tbh considering my old vectra gets 45mpg in taxi use around glasgow. and the trusty old 1.9 tdi skoda will do 48






A couple of Texan Sheriffs departments are hoarding the last Crown Vic Pursuit cars as they come to the end of their life, they claim there is still nothing better for them :confused:

know a few taxi companies that still have unregistered mk1 octavias sitting tucked away really was the best taxi ever made basic cheap, good on fuel and bleeding reliable
 
Yeah as PMKeates says it's a better design for 'disabled' visitors i.e. massive US fatties.
 
I'm amused by people saying the Crown Vic's are iconic. They've only been using them for the last 10 (?) years. At the moment there's probably about 10 different types of cars being used for yellow cabs, Crown Vic's, random Nissans, Ford Edges, Prius etc etc.
 
Really? I just got in whatever one turned up there was so many different types, but I went in the middle of winter and getting in anything was a blessing.
haha, well I would have done the same in that situation. But I reckon most tourists take the cabs short distances, just for the "new york experience", distances I'm pretty sure they'd just walk if the cabs all turned into yellow nissan vans.

There are different ones, but they're all sedan-style, and always have been. Changing them for something mondeo-esque would have been fine, but vans just look ridiculous.

IIRC London Canada Police department purchased a load of propane powered crown vics.

The Ford factory that makes them is only down the road. It is due to close in Aug / Sept.

yes but the Nissan NV200 is going to be using a 2.0 4 cylinder petrol in New York which is excellent imo. Especially if thats the extra urban figure for around New York as opposed to the European Combined Cycle figure.

what the BBC don't mention is what the Nissan NV200 was up against from ford. They were not proposing crown victorias but Ford Transit Connects !

Thames Valley Police bought loads of Vectras just as they went out of production; those sorts of moves aren't always good ones. The CV has been around for absolutely ages without any real changes, the Dodge Charger and new Impala are both very competent police vehicles.

There are different ones, but they're all sedan-style, and always have been.

I've seen plenty of minivan and SUV type taxis too.
