Completely!
He is wanting to test drive a £22k car, a phone call would seem much more appropriate

Sounds like he's got some good options. I'd imagine the 350z would be fairly cheap to run(like an S2000).

It down to the test drives now I guess

A Boxster that new under warranty probably wouldnt cost a lot more than a 350z to run.

True but it's still £6k more.

That Porsche in the advert looks like 2 yrs trouble free driving. What's it likely to be worth in 2 yrs?

I wouldnt like to guess really, its a 3.4 so will hold better than a 3.2, either way its going to hold its money better than a 16k 350z i would think.

Spoke to him last night as we hadn't caught up for about a week.

He's pretty much set on a Porsche, he didn't like the 350Z - just didn't get on with the looks and the interior. He doesn't want a Z4M and we can't think of much else he does want apart from a Porsche.

However he doesn't know what Porsche

Cayman is out of the budget.

He's got £20k at the moment, he recons he'll have £25k within 3 months.

Boxtser he can get for about £20k, will be a current shape (although surely they are changing it soon)? He'll get a fairly decent 3.4 S and that's all well and good. He agrees he wouldn't spend more than £20k/£21k on a Boxster and would do whatever to get an OPC warranty on it.

£20k also seems to get you the old shape 911 (996 is it?), seems a bit odd to look at an 'old shape' car but we can hardly tell the difference between the 996 and 997 and he's got a private plate anyway. Downside to this is it's gonna be minimum 6 (I think?) years old and not sure how easy it is to OPC warranty these.

£25k gets you a 997 but Mark advises not to get one of these? He doesn't want to spend more than £25k on a car at the moment. So is it a case of certainly stay away from these? How are they like to get an OPC warranty?

Before you ask/suggest he goes and drives them I've said that but I do equally understand walking into your first Porsche garage and looking very young and asking to test drive a 996 and 997 and Boxster when they know they pretty much won't get a sale out of you because your budget is £25k isn't going to get you very far.

Get a Boxster from a decent indy or OPC themself, there aint much difference in prices really.

In fact just go and get a Boxster from OPC, then thats 2 years trouble free motoring for him.

When you look at OPC prices remember that includes the warranty he will pay 2k for anyway.

Just worked out my Boxster has cost me £288 per month in the past year, including servicing, fixing stuff, tyres (not replaced but obviously will be at some point) tax, insurance, but excluding fuel and depreciation (pretty minimal on a 10 year old Boxster)

350Z's are NOT cheap to run! Business partner has one and never seems to spend less than £1k come service time

Didn't realise the warranty was £2k and that it would be automatically included at an OPC.

Plus any work you would need to do before they will give you the warranty which I assume will always sent you back a few bob.

Very good point.

That's the one that is local to him/us. He's £2-£3k short at the moment though and surely he'll get hardly anything off that, and it'll sell in the next month or so.

Interesting to know the answer is pretty much avoid a 911 even though he can afford the running costs.

Heres what i would do if he likes that car, he goes in and bids them 21k, they will say no and deal at 21.5 - 22k probably.

If he really cant borrow 2k off his mum then give them 10k and tell them to keep the car 6 weeks or whatever he needs, they will probably wear that.

Or just wait and find another, but thats local, good colour and reasonable money.

Really? I thought a few hundred quid off a Porsche like that would be good considering I've heard getting money off them in a nightmare?

I'll ask him about borrowing, I think it's a case he could probably borrow a bit or something but then he'll want £1k-£2k spare in the car fund to cover anything that might happen and then insurance is gonna be £1.2k.

Its an old car thats starting to feel old now, and then you get into refresh the suspension, radiators clutches brakes, whats the point, i dunno iv gone off 996's a bit now unless you get a minter, then you might as well buy a 997 for that money.

the issue with fuel prices atm doesnt help at all either. Filling up a tank you lose out on 20 quid no days at 1.36p a litre....that 20 quid could usually give me half a tank for the next round :|

Nah hes going to get a grand knocked off that worst ways.

Thats not really relevant in this bit of the market.
