hi im Russell or Rusty to most im pretty new to all this computer building stuff iv just built 3 very basic PCs for friends and family and now im starting to build my own rig.

i have the following components taken from my old computer

Cosmos S case
1000 Watt corsair modular power supply
GTX 470 OC edition < dont know if thats the right term sorry
4 ultra funky LED case fans lol

and i have just purchased the following components

Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail

Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard

Crucial RealSSD M4 64GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive

12GB corsair vengenance DDR3 RAM 3 X4GB

OcUK Value 150Mbps N Lite Mini-Size Wireless USB Network Adapter

my first question is any tips on building this rig and anything i should be aware of??

also i am intending on watercooling only my CPU but i am a total noob and im running scared at the moment if im honest! any tips?? i have just bought the coolermaster aquagate MAX and have mounted it in my Cosmos S it looks sweet but i am not sure of pipes needed waterblocks etc could anyone point me in the right direction of these pipes ie sizes etc and water blocks i noticed some water blocks dont have the barbs on them do i buy these seperate or what is the storey?

thanks for reading love the forum and any help would make you a legend

Hi there, Welcome to to OCUK forums :)

Sounds like you have a nice system there, however if you bought the i7 950/X58 stuff recently then I would strongly suggest you cancel the order ASAP. The newer, cooler LGA 1155 sandy bridge system is a good deal faster (have a look at this review).

If you are mainly gaming then the i5 2500K is a great chip (here is how it compares to the i7 950) and currently only costs £150. Couple it with a nice P67 board like this and 4GB DDR3 RAM like this you will have the basis of a really quick, good value system. Also bear in mind that the sandy bridge quad cores like the i5 2500K easily hit 4.4-4.5 GHz under decent air cooling and if you push the voltages (and use high-end cooling) it can reach 4.8-4.9GHz. Edit: If you want 8GB of RAM then this kit is a good choice.

As for watercooling, Its admirable that you are giving it a go - but it is tough to start out. I would suggest posting your final spec in the "overclocking and cooling" sub-forum and asking for advice there as those lads know their stuff about water cooling. In the mean time the stock air cooler should get you by.

Also may I ask what will you be mainly be using the new PC for and what is the make and model number of the 1000W PSU (should say on the sticker on the side).

;)

Personally, I would choose a sandybridge over that build (which I did infact do, a few months ago), however the i7 950 is still a very capable chip, what was the old spec? What are you using your PC for?

As for help for building, have a look through this sticky Has quite a lot of information about what to do etc.

its for gaming and work it there really that much difference in the X58 and sandbridge??

i work at video editing photo editing in my spare time and my work involves AutoCAD designing high quality models so i want a future proof PC that will last me 5+ years i had my last rig for 6 years!

is X58 not better for speed etc? my airflow should be good with the cosmos S right i dont want to be cancelling things now lol sorry im lazy but is the x58 not newer?

Ah, yes - corsair PSU, didn't see that, my mistake. Really nice PSU.

And yes, the Sandy Bridge CPUs are a good deal faster than LGA 1366/X58 chips like the i7 950 as they use a newer faster architecture- Sandy bridge is about 2 years newer than X58.

Considering your uses I would suggest looking at the new i7 2600K. This is a quad core with hyperthreading enabled (like the i7 950) but uses the new sandy bridge architecture, is clocked higher, overclocks further, uses less power and runs cooler.

Have a look at this direct comparison between the i7 2500K and the i7 950 in a range of CPU-heavy applications:

So long as it hasn't already shipped out from OCUK, then there shouldn't be any issue cancelling the X58 order - just call them up and say you want to change the order.

If you do this you will be able to get a faster, newer and easier to cool system for basically the same money.

cheers for the help guys i must post that watercooling query in that section

i think ill stick with that x58 board atm if i have any problems ill be sure to take ur advise and swap for a sandybridge as i said im a noob in this sort of stuff the x58 shouldnt let me down tho should it??

No - it shouldn't let you down, the X58 boards/CPUs are old tech these days (came out first in 2008), but they are tried, tested and work well.

ok iv just cancelled so what board and processor should i get??

Lol! But you was so persistant up until now lol

Whats your budget for them both?

i7-2600k with an MSI P67A-GD65 would be ideal but there is room for cut-backs there.

Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor with FREE Operation Flashpoint Red River Game £249.98

MSI P67A-GD65 Intel P67 (socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge) ** B3 REVISION ** £139.98

Total : £401.36 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Good man :)

I would suggest this CPU and this motherboard.

How much RAM do you think you will need? This kit is good value for 8GB 9and it is also good quality stuff), if you need more, then I would suggest doubling it up.

If you are running a water cooling system - make sure you get a CPU block that supports the LGA 1155 socket - this has the same mounting as the LGA 1156 socket, so if a block just mentions s1156, then it will also work with your board.

lol sorry im stubborn at times but then usually give in lol im just off the phone from OCUK and they have cancelled so i think im going to go for

Intel Core i7-2600 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail
£229.99

Asus P8P67 PRO Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge) ** B3 REVISION **
£136.55

Crucial RealSSD M4 64GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive

suggestions??

Get a i7-2600K for the unlocked mutipliers so you can overclock.

Asus have had their fair share of probems with the p67 boards so imo you should get a gigabyte or msi board and if you can wait 2 weeks then get the ocz agility 3

The i7 2600 (non K) doesn't overclock properly - so if you are building a watercooling system this CPU would be abit of a waste as you can't push it to 4.4GHz+ like the 2600K chip which only costs a bit more.

As for the board, the ASUS is OK but there have been a lot of user-reported issues with the ASUS LGA1155 boards - hence the recommendations for the MSI board which is known to be solid - Gigagbtye boards are also good, but they don't use the newer user-friendly UEFI BIOS type (personally I like the old BIOS), this is a really good Gigabyte board.

The crucial M4 looks like a good drive, but the low write speed would make me consider this drive (or this really quick drive if you are willing to wait a bit).

currently in my basket what board folks ???
