I'm buying more ram, but they have different speeds.

My current ram is PC3-10700 and i'm going to be gettin PC3-12800, what will happen if i put the new ram (12800) in my system with the old ram? it wont become unstable or anything will it?

Thanks a lot, Fragil1ty

I assume you're buying PC3-12800 because it's cheaper otherwise you should just buy more PC3-10666.

If you buy PC-12800 you will need to run it at PC3-10666 speed (1333MHz) to match your existing RAM. You will also need to run it with the same memory timing and voltage.

If you provide some details of your existing system and RAM we'll do our best to find something compatible.

I'm buying 12800 because that's the next compatible ram available to myself without going too far up on the scale.

I ran the crucial memory too to find out as it analyses your motherboard and that's what it came up with, i did search for other alternates but none were found on this website sadly.

And like previously stated unless you missed that, i've currently got 2 sticks of PC3-10700 which is running at 667mhz (DRAM frequency) so 1333'ish at 9-9-9-24.

Hope this helps you.

Your System should work ok but it's important that everything runs at the same speed so some of your modules will be underclocked.. You may have to set the memory frequency, voltages and timing manually to that of the slowest modules. If your not used to this, then things can get a bit sticky.. Speaking which, give this a read.. it answers you question :)

PC-10700 is just PC-10666 where the manufacturer has rounded the number.

This is evident by the fact that your current RAM is running at 1333MHz which is the speed of PC-10666.

You have 2 choices:

1) Buy more PC-10666 RAM and it will run at the same speed as your current RAM. Selection here:

2) Buy PC-12800 RAM but you will have to run it at PC-10666 speed. Selection here:

Either way both the old and the new RAM will need to run with the same timings (9-9-9-24) and with the same voltage (whatever your current RAM uses).

I assume you're going from 4GB to 8GB so you'll need to have a 64bit operating system.
