Is spreading it a better method than just applying a blob and letting the cooler push down and spread it out or is it personal preference?
You can do either, I spread.
After you have tightened down the four thumb screw/nuts onto the back plate to secure the cooler, give it a little wiggle from side to side to help spread the stuff around, it will only twist a little bit.

Not that it matters a great deal, but the best method is a pea sized blob (so 5-5.5mm) that is distributed by the weight of the cooler.
Spreading it (and most other methods, e.g. line method) often lead to formation of air bubbles or pockets that really aren't beneficial in cooling for obvious reasons

For the CPU power connector, on the XFX PSU there are 2 cables described as:
1x ATX 12V/EPS12V (4/8pin) - this is a single cable split into 2x 4pins
1x EPS 12V (8pin) - this is a single fixed 8pin cable
Which do I want to use with the GD65? (already done 24pin)

ATX. The other is for server boards IIRC.

One of the 4pin plugs will notch under the other incase you're struggling to fit them, or it doesn't seem to physically fit

Yea I went up the back of the case. It would have just about fit if I went straight up the inside but would have been in the way of all the PCI slots. I dont mind waiting for an extension cable as I still don't have the graphics card so I can't actually turn it on yet .
Theres not a great deal of space on the back of the CM690 to put cables!

Well I've got it up and running with a really old graphics card (single slot, doesn't even need extra power, 2.0 WEI rating 
) but the computer freezes up quite a bit. I wiped the drive and reinstalled W7 but it still keeps freezing up quite a lot, what could cause that? Could it be because of the really old graphics card?
I cant see anything relevant in Event Viewer, the only critical/warning events is from the hard reboot I have to do when it freezes.
