right then, my little brother wants my old machine:

- Q8200 (VERY Poor OC'er)
- arctic pro freezer 7
- asus p5ql-epu
- 4gb ddr2
- 9500gt
- 350w name-less psu
- 19" LG 1,440x900

(i didnt build this :p)

What is the cheapest upgrade (s) which will allow crysis 2 to be played?

thanks guys

Overclock the CPU for free.

add a 5830/50 at £86/£109

thanks for the suggestions :)

1) really no point overclocking the cpu - it is a VERY poor OC'er

2) that is WAY more than i want to spend, i literally want it to play on the lowest settings :p the 5850 is what ive got in my machine! :p

You will need a decent psu before you do anything!!

i completely agree! what do you suggest as a GPU+PSU combo?

so what about the 9500GT you wrote? for your brothers spec, are you going to give him your 5850?

nope! what i am saying is that i have the 5850 in mine and i can play it on max graphics at 1080p, i want to spend the bare minimum to upgrade his machine so that it will run on the lowest settings and 1440x900 res - he will get bored of it after 5 minutes! Seriously - the bare minimum! :)

Cheapest psu i would use is this. You will need a new psu. A no name 350w is probably at it's max already.

Graphics card, something like a 5770/5830. Even cheaper if you go second hand.

Won't the quad even hit 3Ghz?

honestly, a 5830 is about it, even saving £10 on a 5770 isnt actually worth it.

Or as mentioned second hand, GTX260 is like £50

but still need a PSU.

Not neccessarily. My old Q9550 did 3.6Ghz on stock volts. I know it had a higher multiplier than the Q8200 but 45nm quads are pretty easy to clock. What speed is the ram?

thanks for the suggestion, but i have looked into it and i dont feel it is worth it tbh

Unfortunately, the Q8200 would barely budge beyond its original 2.33 GHz frequency, regardless of how much voltage we applied to its core, reaching the same 2.5 GHz overclocked speed at core voltage settings from stock to 1.45 volts.

i might look for a secondhand 5830 and decent brand psu :)

Just because one was poor does'nt mean they all are. Somebody had one last week that did around 3Ghz. I will see if i can find the thread again.

***Edit*** Just did a quick look around and these things are quite capable of hitting 3.2Ghz which would be a significant boost. I will have a look around for some settings for you in the morning if you are interested.

im really not sure, especially with that psu and the fact i am only just getting my head around SB overclocking, let alone the more complex 45nm ones - thank you for the offer though - very kind :)

if i change my mind in the future, ill definately take up your offer though - thanks :)

right then guys, ive had a look and i bought just now, second-hand:

- Antec Basiq BP550Plus
- Asus ATI Radeon HD 4850 512mb

i have had a look and the PSU seems decent with enough sockets and the GPU seems like it will run crysis 2 at a playable capacity so i am happy, and i got it all at a nice price :D
