iPhone 4 - Microsim

So I'm currently on an old O2 Simplicity sim-only tariff and with an unlimited web bolt on. I want to buy a sim-free iPhone 4 but I need a microsim. I just got off the phone to O2 and apparently I would need to upgrade my tariff/bolt on because my current web bolt on won't be compatible with the iPhone 4. It uses different codes or something to access the internet??

Anyone know if this is true? Or is this O2 guy just trying to get me to change my web bolt on so that it's no longer unlimited web usage?

It is absolute horse****. Don't let him change you from your current tariff as O2 have stopped doing it.

Try another person at O2 or failing that you can get a cutter to trim your simcard.

The whole microsim thing is just a nonsense.

It is compatible, they just try to charge you extra. You just need to cut the sim down to size and slot it in. But you do need to type the settings in manually. That's what I had to do with O2 sim card any way.

Yeah, I was on a standard Vodafone smartphone tariff and I took some scissors to my SIM card to make it fit. Worked absolutely fine for the whole six months I had the iPhone.

It's seriously backwards why the network operators treat an Iphone like a completely different type of smart phone that uses 'special' data and charge you more for exactly the same thing, not only did you have to pay a premium for the handset you then get shafted for owning it and wanting to use it.

As above, cut the SIM down don't tell O2 and just put the setting in the phone yourself. :)

Apart from vodafone 30 day iPhone contracts i think they are better value than the non iPhone tarrifs, although there's no direct comparison.

£20
iPhone 300minutes, unlimited texts, 1gb 3G, 1gb bt open zone,
Standard phone 600 minutes, unlimited texts, 500mb 3G
Blackberry contract 300minutes, unlimited texts, 1gb 3G

Three/3 are currently doing a 12 month SIM only deal for 300 minutes, 3000 texts, 1GB data, for £10pm and Topcashback of £54.54 making it cost £5.45 a month that's about the best SIM only deal out there right now.

But what if I cut it wrong and mess up my sim? O2 would probably charge me £10/£15 for a new replacement sim :(

I suppose it's not so bad if I upgrade my tariff, as I only get 150mins and 300 texts at the moment, plus my unlimited web bolt on. If I upgrade, the price would stay the same but I get 100mins, 500 texts and a 500mb web bolt on instead.

I'm happy with O2 so don't really want to change networks.
Oh I don't know what to do :o

I purchased a Iphone 4 last year when I was on a typical tariff for the HTC HD2, I went into a local O2 store and picked up a Microsim for free and used the online transfer service to transfer my details to the new sim chip, took less than a hour.

You will need to reconfigure the Iphone settings as you wont be using the Iphone tariff.

I used this setting below:

Swap my sim service:

Thanks!! That's very helpful :)

As per RJC's post, you should be able to walk in and ask for a micro-SIM free of charge. That's what I did with Vodafone, no questions asked. On a SIM only contract myself.

They've got no right to question you about what phone you're using when you're on a SIM only plan, defies the whole point of the the contract. :)

Haha, don't blame the networks for that, blame Apple.

Does o2 still use a different APN for iphone data?

Yes, idata.o2.co.uk still.

No, I blame the networks still. Apple tax exists sure, but in this instance the raping comes from the networks I feel. People are willing to pay their extortionate rates whilst subsidising the cost of an expensive phone, so they can charge those prices - and they do.

What are you basing your blame of apple on, as I posted above vodafone aren't a rip off for iPhone.

Look at the general deals you would get on other smartphones in terms of monthly cost and the amount of stuff you get included.

Then look at the iphone, to get the same amount of minutes/texts/data you will be paying more. What's even more amusing is that the actual hardware (just a PAYG jobby without contract) costs about the same for a brand new top of the range android as it does for a brand new iPhone. Apple tax. It's awesome.
