I went to one of the Petstores today just to have a browse. Came across a bearded dragon, got to say I really like the look of it and was wondering if any of you on here have them as pets?

I've always kept birds, such as parakeets and budgies. But never had a reptile of some sort.

Are they hard to look after, and do they need a lot of heat?

I was thinking of getting a 3FT type of Vivarium, do they grow to be really big?

Thanks in advance.

Get on to reptile forums and read some caresheets.

You'll eventually need a 4ft Viv but 3ft will do for a juvinile. You'll need a heat lamp and thermostat, uv strip and substrate.

Will post more when I get to a pc, instead of my phone :p

I've got a 6ft iguana, had him for about 15 years now, easiest pets in the world once you get them tame and buy all the kit.

Beardeds are even easier cos they're smaller.

Get the pellet food for them, decent thermostat and decent ceramic heater (no mats etc), and mount the UV bulb within a foot of their main branch.

easy pets,

(crap though, expect no love, loyalty, games, fun, or facination after a year or so).

Nice! Although for a beardie, use a normal heat lamp rather than ceramic and feed live food, many won't go for pellets and they aren't as fun to feed :p

Beardies are awesome :D

4ft viv
heat bulb
uv strip bulb
thermostat

main things there, other stuff like calcium and things to climb on etc and you are sorted :D

Everyone who comes to our house loves mine and he always gets let out for a play :D

My sister has two of them. I find them interesting to look at and it makes me smile how they watch you walk around the room but I think her's are a bit bad tempered at the moment for me to trust picking them up, etc.

She usually feeds them silent crickets, leaves them some salad-ey type stuff there every so often too which one of them seems to absolutely love. I also like watching them chase down the crickets, the dragons seem to slowly track the cricket's movements and then suddenly jump for them.

They have a habit of trying to jump up at the heat-bulb though which I'm guessing isn't normal but they try that every so often, it's probably only my sister's dragons that do it :p

Mine takes lunges at his UV strip light, though hes never going to get it in a million years, he will just dive from his log, then scurry off to his food like he meant to do it :p

They eat both insects (crickets, mealworms, locusts, etc) and fruit/veg. Pretty sure they're one of the easiest lizards to look after, although they still need the correct setups to live a healthy life.

The UK Reptile forums will have all you need to know.

Oh, and only buy one. They are solitary animals. Ignore any pet shop that tries to tell you different! Read caresheets, and enjoy!

I've had one for nearly a year, very easy to look after. Hes in a 3x1.5ft vivarium, and its more than enough with a good log to bask on, got loads of fake leaves in there for him to hide under and half a log to hide under when he wants his provacy. He eats between 5 and 10 locust a day and fresh greens everyday with the occasional blueberry. Keep his vivarium at 90-95f during thw day with the UV on and at night turn the temp down to around 85f and turn the UV off so he can get some shut eye.

At the start he didnt like me but now he loves being out, quite a few days he spends more time walking round the house than in his vivarium, running round like a looney.

 really had my iggy for 5 years now and it loves me no one else can go near it otherwise it lashes out at them plus it comes running to me when i have food I love seeing it everyday makes me laugh seeing the eyes light up and the thoughts going on in her head (even if its thinking how do i get up there) :) :D

A friend of mine has a pair of which the male is quite randy. To the point where he paralysed the female from hind legs down (back?)! Luckily being a lizard, she regenerated whatever damage he did to her spine while getting all amorous after a few weeks.

I think it's probably the food that's exciting her.

In work atm, I'll stick some pics up tomoz of him, he's a really good iggy, generally speaking extremely tame (although we have a few run-ins).

Females tend to be better as they don't go into season (god he's a pain in the arse when it's that time of year). He's only really ever whipped when he's been in a vunerable position, he slept behind the tv once and decided he was gonna stay there, so we had to fish him out through the front of it (the unit that is), not a happy bunny, hissing and cracking his tail into the unit, got him out in the end though.

He also chased my uncle of his couch once.
