hey guys, i have an LG tv/monitor but it has no dvi port only hdmi or vga

as it's a tv/monitor do you think the picture would be better through the hdmi or vga for computing?

does a dvi to vga cable display the screen in as good quality as a dvi to dvi would?

i leaning towards the dvi to hdmi but not sure if the tele would actually be better optimized for the vga port

any advice welcome thanks

DVI to HDMI

+1

DVI to HDMI does not lose any quality since it is the same digital video signal, just through a different pin arrangement.

However, VGA is analogue so it won't look quite as good (still should look pretty nice), but if you have the option I would certainly go with HDMI.

ok thanks, i'm just wondering if my tele is better on vga rather than hdmi for computing

think i'll get a dedicated monitor in the future

i might get a 20" 1600x900 instead of using my 23"1080p tv, they look about the same with them sized screens and it means my setup will last longer on games without having to upgrade as often

Yea, it will look better on HDMI - modern TVs only include analogue VGA ports for legacy support, running the same image a properly configured HDMI connection will look better than VGA. The difference won't be massive, but it is there.

To be honest, I wouldn't suggest doing this, you can get a 1080p 22in monitor these days for just over £100 - the 20in won't be much cheaper than this and they are clearly inferior monitors. Also, when this comes back in stock you can get a 24in 1080p monitor for £135. Also, for running games at 1080p, with current middle range graphics cards you can play modern games very smoothly at 1080p. This HD 5830 card is current on offer for £71 (usually £86) this card will happily play modern games at 1080p and look great doing it (if you are looking for a new graphics card then I would jump on this one ASAP - this is a great deal).

May I ask what graphics card you are running?

gtx 570, i know it's a high end card and 1080p isn't much bother on most games for it, but as a baby will be coming next year and generall living expenses going up i am tempted for the 1600x900 to add them extra fps on games in the future

unless there's a way to black out the background for windowed mode(seeing the desktop really puts me off when gaming)

Ah, you have a proper graphics card ! That GTX 570 will beast any modern game at 1080p - includings crysis 2, BF:BC2 (basically you name it, it can play it well at that resolution).

In that case PLEASE just get a 1080p monitor. Games really aren't getting any more intensive (and they won't until the next console generation comes along in about 4 years) so I say get the nice monitor and enjoy your gaming (and your new family member - congratulations btw :))

thats similar to what i have now, 23" lg tv/monitor led

as it's my first computer i have no basis to compare how the quality is compared to a dedicated monitor

+ 1 to getting a 1080p monitor. You have the graphics card for it.

The 22" BenQ looks good value. Plenty of people have been impressed with the 24" version. The 22" version loses 2" (no sniggering at the back) but is much cheaper.
