Supplements the debate/discussion thread

Thanks for the pointers guys. I guess you're all right regarding sorting out a proper routine/diet 1st.

I'm looking to train in the mornings before work so was kind of looking to drink a protein shake after the work out for breakfast. now is this wrong?

Eating healthy is fine for losing weight, but if you want to gain muscle you need to ensure you are eating enough of the right stuff.

I echo Morba: Eh?!

In prisons they don't have much to do, so they train as much as they like and they get healthy meals at set times during the day.

I wish I could have set meals and always have them on time, the same for training.

Could anyone recommend a good alternative to milk? Unfortunately I can't take dairy products, I would prefer natural foods and not supplements thou. Hate my body sometimes :(

they dont train as much as they like, they get a set amount of time in the gym. its not like they are on holiday. some of them are only allowed out of their cell for 1 hour of the day, i personally asked someone who has been inside berlinnie. i know 2 guys who have went inside through a friend and they both started training inside because there really is nothing else to do apart from cards and gambling.

also their food is mass produced and cheap. its not as if they are eating fillet steaks and chicken breasts every day cooked by a 5 star chef, the person cooking it will be on minimum wage, have you even looked at the prison guards salary, its nothing, so i doubt they can afford top chefs.

also that guy on stronglifts, mehdi did a whole blog on prisons and speil about training hard and eating crap food, is better than messing about and eating fillet steak every night.

Haha!

I wish I could eat like you discribed, I'm a poor student living abroad in ireland.

70% of my food is from cans, I get chicken fillets cheap from a farm sometimes. Also they can train in their cells and an hour is also nice for a gym.

Two of my extended family members are also prison gaurds and they say it's much better in there compared to average life back in South Africa anyway.

Agree with all of your post apart from that bit. I'd rather miss a training session than miss a meal. Nutrition is vital. Training can wait a day, food can't.

I disagree, plenty of people fast for 8, 16 even 24 hours with no negative impact.

Muscle gain is 80% training I'd say, 20% diet.

Body composition, however, is the opposite: 80% diet, 20% training.

students complain about being poor, but tbh, they usually have their priorities all wrong. spending money on laptops, mobile phones, alcohol, nights out, etc, then leaving the heating off 365 days of the year in order to save a few quid.

first of all you could have stayed at home? no? your parents i would hazard a guess dont buy much tinned food? also there are things called part time jobs, get a job in a restaurant / take away and you could get meals for free, etc.

my aunt managed to get a first class degree with 2 kids and a part time job, i would love to hear your excuse for buying tinned food.

also your comparing the UK to a 3rd world country, hell i could say, someone working inside a mens toilet in a gay nightclub says he's living a much better life than when he was in india. you cant make wild comparisons like that.

Anything that gives you the slightest edge seems to get banned in professional sports nearly.

Supplements are designed just for that, they shouldn't be labelled as illegal, unless they contain illegal substances, which Jack3D doesn't contain. It might be trying to introduce fair play, but anyone can buy the stuff.

If is stayed at home I'd still be in South Africa, doesn't work for studying in Ireland much. I also don't drink at all and rarely go out thanks to my work load, I don't own a laptop either and I built my pc before going to college that I have with me.

My Visa also limits the amount of work I can have.
Since I am a South African I compare the two places I know, Ireland and South Africa.

Not only do I pay extremely large amounts to live here and for college fees, the exchange rate is also a bloody joke really. Not to mention paying yearly for my immigration card which is €150 at the moment for a piece of plastic.

As a foreign student I get no benefits what so ever here in Ireland, but pay more then an Irish citizen going to a private University or College here.

I buy tinned food because at a sale at Aldi and Lidl 30cents for a can of baked beans, red kidney beans, peas or carrots a bloody bargain, along with their tinned fish, meats and veg.
I buy fresh chicken fillets or beef when ever I get to go with my friend to a wholesale farm shop. When that happens I buy as much as I can afford.

I've done damn well with the €400 euro I get a month, considering my rent alone is 85 a week.

Took me quite a while to save up and buy my powerlifting belt, which is probably the most expensive thing I got that I "wanted" this year.

One sec while i group all students together and slate them all. After my (minimum possible) loan comes in, i pay my rent and have nothing left. Go out once a week drinking, if that, and even then its only a few pints. Food money comes from what i saved up working 2 jobs over summer and borrowed from my dad.

:o I hate getting put in the same group as, for example 2 of my housemates who get the maximum loan, extra grants etc etc and blow it all on ****.

Anyway without going too far off topic, chest+triceps today, looking forward to the burn  And i bought some glucosamine to see if it makes a difference with my joints after a friend from home said it did.

there are plenty of places which will employ you if you are on a student visa, and tell the government you only work 16 hours a week, whereas you do a lot more and pay cash in hand. there are millions of students doing this, i know some who just come over here on a student visa, dont even bother going to uni and just work instead.

i know this for a fact. you may not get an amazing wage (less than minimum, aim for £4 to £4.50 an hour) but it will be better than nothing.

also, you could look at cheaper accommodation or sharing a flat with more than its supposed to be used for, for example i know 3 students living in a 1 bedroom flat. this makes their rent extremely cheap, because its split by 3 and not 1.

i know a lot of international students working 40+ hours a week where there visa only allows for a max of 16.

there are ways around everything.

theres always an exception to the rule, you just said yourself both your house mates are like this. i would hazard a guess that most students living away from home are exactly like i described, i know i just finished uni last year.
