Agreed, i can see my self shooting wide open a lot.....

now anyone want to give me the 85 1.2?

Why do you think I do it a lot? lol

It gives a dreamy feel to it too, something you just can't fake. The whole look affects your brain sub-consciously, and you just look and look at the photo. (Provided you nail the focus.)

This is one part of photography where Gear > Photographer.

And may be you understand why the Holy Trinity of primes are sooooo sought after? :)

Just out of curiosity, what would you say your AF hit rate was, at such short DOF? (inc. user error etc.)

i cant vouch for the 1.2, but 50mm f1.4 centre point focus i would say 8/10 if the subject is relatively still, decrease that massively if they are moving or dancing etc...

using the outer points it is less accurate

5DmkIII should have autofocus for videomode as is rumoured. Would be nice if you could adjust aperture also, bu not sure how that woudl work.

Sounds similar to my 85mm 1.8.
In your opinion, would you say the 17-50mm 2.8 was slower but more consistent?
I feel it has been for me, but then again the 17-50mm has more DOF, so maybe that's the reason...

In terms of keepers compare to misses, errrrr, never really counted but funnily enough, I have a higher hit rate at 1.2 on a candid shot than I do on formals. On some family formals I shoot 4.5, and at candid I am at 1.2, 1.4 to 1.8 most of the time and often you get one shot at a moment...I seem to capture that moment how I want it more than the formals.

I am sure you can adjust aperture since an update a year ago.

The trick to get the outer point to focus is have it land on something contrasty. Like if there are 2 colours, make it land on the joint. If it's the arm, make it land on a mole on a bracelet. Normally the eye it's quite easy because the White in it with the dark pupil helps.

I dont think that its more consistant, its just the margin of error at 1.4 is so small... you literally have a focal plane a couple of inches wide, if someone leans forward just a little after focusing ... you get oof.

@2.8 you a greater margin for error.

wrong thread?

No, just a page too late!

Hmmm. I though you still needed to make all your settings before switching to live view. It's not that bad, really, because it's just like setting up for a still. Will investigate! Maybe i need new firmwares.

Oh... also get the technicolor firmware... cinecolor? it's amazing.
