Considering a fun weekend car - opinions on these two please

Fiat Coupe Turbo? Under budget but you can spend the rest of it on keeping it running.

I'd get a Caterfield or 'Teg Type-R or Mx-5 if it was my choice though.

Precisely. That's why a 90s VW hatchback and a common as muck old Audi seem like a bit of a strange choice.

Again, I'm not knocking the Corrado, I'm saying that it has always stuck me as the type of car you don't 'Ask' people on the internet if you should get or not. If you over analyze getting one to the point of sticking up a thread and really thinking about one they won't make an awful lot of sense. It's a heart over head choice for sure.
 
I guess that comes down to how you (subjectively) view the Corrado.

I personally love them, as do many of my friends - in fact, I got a better response from some of them when I got the Corrado than I did the VXR or ST. My other half, however, looks at it as Fox does - a 90s VW.

It aint got that special feel good factor though has it.

How about a R129 SL Merc, you might find a tidy one of those for 6 or 7k.
 
TT's haven't aged well at all, I never liked them though.

Personally i'd be looking for a fun little hatch you can get some great ones in your budget and they wont be rotten, ancient and in comparison to a TT and Corado they wont be expensive to maintain
 
I couldn't think of many worse weekend cars than the TT 225. I owned one for a year or so and it was so dull to drive, albeit fairly quick in a straight line.

I've currently got a £1,300 MX-5 1.8i sat outside and it's 10x more fun than the TT ever was. Get an MX-5 if it's fun at the weekends you're after. At least test drive one and see what all the fuss is about.

Completely agree. If its just a car for fun at the weekend, that you want to keep and love, get something special.

Considering you've already had two TT's and I'm presuming you've sold them both - it hardly fulfills the keep and love criteria.

Corrado's are nice. However they're already price hiked classics. Shuold never depreciate - however you're not buying a car as an investment.
 
Yea, Ant84's on the money there - I'd most likely be looking at something that was definitively a 'classic' or an out-and-out sports car of its era. Corvette, yes, maybe a 70s/80s BMW or an early Japanese performance car, a 70s/80s V8 TVR, maybe a boosted MX-5, something that was really fun to own and drive - even at legal speeds.

Could be looking at Porsche 924/944/928 as well but obvioulsy some of those attract considerably higher running costs. E30 318iS would be fun, or maybe an E28 M535i....Tuned up Rover P6 3500S or Triumph 2000/2500 :D
 
Thanks all, it's given me some things to think about. A two seater open top car would be very nice indeed. However I usually have the kids with me at weekends so only having two seats would limit the amount of use I would get out of it. I suppose "fun weekend car" probably isn't quite the right description as I'm not really after a cateram for example. An on the basis of 2+2 that puts the MX5 out of consideration (if I was in the market for a 2 seater soft top then I would definitely have that on the list of possibilities). It's more about a good car that won't depreciate too much, something reasonably practical, reasonably quick, and a 2+2 coupe.

The fiat is an interesting suggestion. I've had a mk2 16v GTI in the past (loved it) so that's another one to consider. However I think I'd find it a little slow nowadays.

I've driven quite a few Corrado VR6's (and owned a Golf VR6) and agree with an induction kit it sounded like the clouds above had opened. Lovely sound. I've done a lot of research into Corrado's in the past so know the pitfalls with them (sunroof, heater matrix, timing chains, etc).

944 and 325i E30 are possibles too.

I knew the TT wouldn't go down well on here :) The only reason I sold them in the past was that I had one a month and swapped it for a better TT and then sold that a year later when I moved house, didn't have anywhere to park it, and wasn't using a car at all (also with kids on way). Loved it at the time.

Porsche 944 was one of my dream cars when I was a kid. Finally got round to owning one when I turned 21 and bought a 3.0 S2, which turned out to be an absolute lemon and, quite frankly, a bit of a disaster.

Would love to do it again when I've got a bit more money behind me but, and I'm kinda stating the obvious here, be very mindful of how much these cars can cost to put right/run.

Buy the Corrado, you have always wanted one and its not like you cant sell it for the price you bought it for when your bored :)
