Am on Virgin media Broad Band with NTL home 256. Also bought Netgear DG834g v3...

NTL home 256 is connected to VMBB then cat 45 cable to my pc.

Can i connect NTL home 256 to DG834g v3. Then configure that router and connect it to my pc so I get wifi + 4 extra cat 45 slots if someone comes to my gaf with pc to hook up?

If so how to do that please? ta

I would guess not as it's a combined ADSL modem & router, which means that it won't have a WAN port you can plug the cable modem into.
At best you might be able to turn off the modem and router part of it, and use it as a wireless access point/switch connected to your PC, with your PC running internet connection sharing (in which case you'd connect the cable modem to the PC, then have ICS turned on on the PC, and connect the DG834g via one of it's lan ports to a secondary connection on the PC).

But that net gear has BB in rj 45 cable. May be I just plug in the rj 45 that comes out of the VMBB box and plug it in to the netgear. Then from net gear plug cable to my pc and configure it? I thought thats how things meant to be.

Trouble is it's expecting the broadband connection to be an ADSL one (ie from the phone line). The internet side of things has an ADSL modem 'hard wired' in.

Your best bet is to dive into the second hand columns and look for a cable router, can't be more than £15-20. If you sell that current netgear you'd likely break even.

You cannot use an ADSL-only router on a cable connection. As already stated you'd be able to use it as a switch and wireless access point, but not a router.

The reason is because the WAN side is the ADSL interface and all of the ethernet ports are LAN side. If you plug your cable modem into one of the LAN-side ethernet ports it's not going to be able to route anything. You need a cable router with an ethernet WAN interface.
