Will this help me to lose weight?

I don't want to go into lots of detail but before the age of 16 I was very skinny and very active. I'm now 20.

I ran into a few personal issues that caused a lot of anxiety/agrophobia for myself and over the years I've put on quite a lot of weight, I want to do something about it but don't really know where to start.

Last year I was doing weight training every day for about 3 months, I certainly noticed a muscle increase but I didn't feel like I was losing weight, but at the same time I wasn't doing much cardio.

Ofcourse their are issues with my diet, mainly because I feel I get hungry a lot so I usually eat a small meal every 4 hours or so. I've really been improving what I'm eating, but I think my downfall is the junk food snacks. I need to replace these with a portion of fruit or something equally as healthy... Any tips for what makes a good 'snack' food?

How is pressups/situps in terms of losing a bit of weight? What I'd usually do is do 4 sets of pressups, dips and situps everyday but will this actually aid in fat loss?

I also try to walk 3 times a day for 20 minutes a time, will this be an help to me?

Cheers guys

First mistake, don't weight train everyday, you only need to weight train from 2-4 times per week, cardio is around about the same as well and make sure you don't neglect body parts, i see so many people not working muscles like your calves from every angle, it's rather disappointing, also, do supersets with your weight training.

Losing weight is mostly done in the kitchen, but intense cardio like 3x 3 minute intervals of jump rope with 1 minute rest between each interval is effective, as is the tabata protocol, you can also do cardio early in the morning on an empty stomach if you want to, also, check out BennyC's thread regarding fasting, it's a good read and has proven to be effective.

I follow a high protein, low carb diet in combination with my high intensity workout regime, and it's the most effective fat loss burning programme i've used in my training experience.

Thanks for the tips.

If I go over 4 hours without having anything to eat I'll start to feel shakey and a bit lightheaded, so that's why I like to have something small to eat every 4 hours or so. Wouldn't be able to exercise on am empty stomach.

I'll have a look into what you suggested.

Cheers

I can't really say that certain methods are more effective than others, but what i can say is i consume protein every 2-4 hours, which means 6 small meals per day for myself. I'll conjure up a better post when i'm back home from work if no-one else has covered this in more depth.

It seems your biggest problem is your diet if you're getting shakey and light headed after 4 hours. What are you eating, sounds like sugary foods often and then you're crashing!

If you want to lose weight, the best way is to adjust your diet accordingly. Aim for 2000 calories with a low-ish amount of carbs compared to protein and fat, and then stick to it. Additional exercise is always a plus!

So it IS possible to lose weight without exercise as long as you're on a good diet?

I don't ALWAYS get shakey after 4 hours, I just start to get strange symptoms. I've always worried about having blood sugar issues though so it's probabaly a bit of anxiety linked to it.

Even now I eat pretty balanced small meals, even if it's just a sandwhich or some noodles.

But as I say my problem is when I'm feeling a bit peckish or just out of boredom I'll go to the cupboard and start feasting. It's the cravings that are the worse.

Is there any good websites that helps you track what you eat every day to see total caloric intake etc?

Cheers

See a doctor first, you shouldn't be getting the shakes.
Running is good for loosing weight, far better than weight training, muscle heavier than fat remember!

Yes, it's a simple equation.

Calories expended must be greater than calories consumed. You could eat less and not move. Or eat the same and burn off extra calories with exercise to create a deficit.

Read GordyR's sticky.

What?! Are you for real? Resistance exercise is an integral part of weight loss. Not only that but muscle mass burns calories at rest as does building and repairing muscle broken down from weight training, not to mention resistance training itself. It's not monotonous like 'just' CV work and it will improve the OP's compositioning too and also give him other goals and barriers to smash.

Telling the OP not to weight train because muscle is heavier than fat and the OP wants to loose weight is the most misguided advice I've seen given in SA.

Weight training increases your metabolism as well as building muscle.

The more muscle you have, the less fat you have is a common phrase mentioned, it has it's flaws in some parts as correct nutrition and the introduction of CV work increase the chance of building muscle and losing fat.

Well if he wants to lose weight as fast as possible best to shed the muscle and keep the fat then

Not serious.

Read Bennys post and the stickys OP

So by doing sets of pressups, dips situps (building muscle?) I'm actually not losing weight because I'll be gaining muscle...?

This is too confusing. :p

They will increase your heart rate, improve muscular endurance and build muscle.

Increasing you heart rate while doing it will also burn calories.

Doing simple bodyweight exercises like dips/situps etc isn't going to build significant mass though.

There are meal ideas on GordyR's sticky, or head into gymrats thread and ask there.

As a starter log everything you eat in a day here (and be honest):

and report back, that will give you a rough idea of what to improve

The main problem you probably have is portion control/snacking, heres a rough example day of what I eat if I want to lose weight (this is from a while ago, but about accurate.

That site looks great, thanks a lot. From tomorrow I will log everything I eat and I will be honest - It'll give me a good indication as right now I don't really know how many calories I'm eating a day. I'll probabaly be suprised!

I'll report back tomorrow and hopefully you guys can give me some more pointers.

Appreciated all the help/advice so far!

Sorry to bump this thread but I'm not sure if I'm understanding right. I don't get how you can lose weight by eating less than normal without doing any exercise? What's burning the extra fat off?

Fat burning foods and liquids that boost the metabolism, exercise accelerates the fat burning process.

you use calories as you breath, simple body functions etc.

The reason you put on fat is you've been taking in too much energy and its stored as fat.

When losing weight you're now burning the fat for energy.

So for example if I cut my diet down and didn't even do a bit of exercise I would still lose weight?

You would, because you've cut down on the amount you've eaten, but to fully lose weight effectively, you would need to exercise to rid excess fat. a lot of people, like myself, use fat as fuel.

yes.

To accelerate fat loss and make changes to your overall build (so you're not a skinny bag of bones :p) you would have to exercise though.
