I am looking for some decent speakers for playing music.

I mostly game using headphones (ns1000s) so that is not a priority.

I have a xonar dg soundcard - I believe that is designed for headphones - is that an issue?

I currently plug my headphones into the front panel when i want to use them, and the speakers are permanently plugged into the rear. I am happy with this system, so dont need a headphone socket.

edit: Don't need to be 2.1 can be 2.0, I am really not interested in 5.1.

Although the DG is aimed at headphone/headset use, no reason why speakers shouldn't be used as well. Aego M's are very good 2.1 speakers for the money. There isn't a great deal of 2.0 speaker choice for £100, decent ones anyway. M-Audio AV40's are very good, but are about £120-£130. Edifier R1600T's have some good comments in a thread in the hi-fi section. IIRC, Andrew Moore, who created the thread, thought the Edifier's had better sound quality than the Aego's, which he also has.

Other alternative would be a separate amp and speakers. Depends if you have space for an amp though. For £100, you could get a used Cambridge Audio A1 and some speakers, Wharfedale 9.0, as just an example.

Separates are the way to go for stereo, it's much easier (and cheaper) to upgrade in the future as you'll already have half the kit. I've done the same thing buying second hand, this is my kit a few months back, I now have 4 of those large speakers and a huge centre channel and the amp all for a few pence under £122, completely blows anything new out the water, just imagine what you could get stereo-wise for that cash ;)

+1 for the Aego M's, I have them and the kick serious tail. You can also order a additional third speaker(centre) for around £40 making it a 3.1 system.

You could seriously upset the neighbours with these lol.

+1 they are a really nice speaker system (especially if you are playing music) - got two sets of them at home I was so impressed (for different rooms).

The satellites are actually really quite small, but they are heavy and really kick out a lot out sound - the subwoofer is also excellent. For connection - just plug them in using the standard 3.5mm stereo cable they come with into your Xonar sound card - nice and simple.

They do cost a bit more than a hundred (£124 from OCUK) but in my opinion they are really worth it and you won't be sorry once you get them hooked up. They are also available in white if you don't wan't to be boring and get black.

I don't want to hold off as they are a birthday present! I also think ~£200 is too much to spend for the amount of music I listen to.

Yeah I hear ya dude, thats fair enough.

If I didn't have my Z5500's I would probably go for these

I've always liked these Rokits but they are expensive :/

hey, is £100 you MAX budget for these? whats the best you could stretch to?

as you'd be best off buying 2 monitor speakers then getting a real sub rather than the crap they usually put in these 2.1 systems,,, £160 would get you the Edifier R1600T's and an Edge EDB10 active sub, and although edge isnt an amazing brand, they arent terrible either, i got an 800watt peak mutant 12" under my desk at home powered by a £15 300watt rms amp i got from a bootsale, also i got the subwoofer (in a sealed enclosure made for the subs spec's) and an 550watt rms car amp from a bootsale for £15, also im using a panasonic 5.1 setup, im not using the sub and i got the mutant sub, so i must've paid about £65 tops for a decent 5.1, the panasonics arent bad and are only like half a year old and came with a box, the mutant is in good nick, and the excursion on the thing aint half bad tbh,,

i personally reccommend going to a few boot sales and see what you can get...

£100 isn't my max budget, more like I am looking in the region of £100.

Car boot sales wouldn't really suit though, as it is a birthday present (for me), so I would rather the simplicity of picking something and ordering it.
