Is Evangelion worth sticking with?

As title really. I've got my hands on the 'remastered' series (really great surround sound i have to say) and the End of Evangelion movie. I'm around 4 episodes into the series and am yet to really understand what's going on.

Will the emergence of these so called 'Angels' ever really be explained, or the events that led up to humans living underground be outlined? It just feels like i've been dropped in the middle of the storyline and because of this i'm finding it difficult to empathise with the characters.

As this is a rather short thread subject i think it might be worth adding another question: If not this, then what series instead? So far in terms of anime i've watched:

Full Metal Alchemist (+ Brotherhood)
One Piece
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Gurren Lagann

I'm quite a big fan of the 'short and sweet' anime series, as much as i love One Piece (ignoring the awful dubbed versions), it does feel like it'll never go anywhere. I like to get a satisfying ending.

I recommend Trigun as another series.

As for NGE, I think it is worth sticking with, but don't expect to ever understand it!:p

If you didn't already have the series I would have suggested waiting for the 4 "Rebuild" movies to be finished as they are meant to be more accessible and the final movie will have a different ending from the original series. However, only 2 movies are done at the moment.

Eva is worth it i think, it doesn't really get into the story until about episode 6-8 (IIRC you don't even get the last member of the main characters introduced until 4 or 5).
The rebuild retelling (in film form) is apparently clearer/slightly different with much better animations :)

Trigun is a classic, Last Exile is very good:)

Just spoke to a mate who has trigun who's willing to lend. Thanks for the recommendation.

I guess i'll have another stab at it, i'd like to see the original before the remake movies come out. Reason being i enjoyed FMA: Brotherhood more because i'd seen the original.

If you really have to have everything explained then you may have problems. I think the endings are confused anyway depending on where you go there are different endings, and those ending can be interpreted in serveral different ways. Its part of the mystique of evangelion.

Its definitely worth it, its one of the stand out series, the drama and characterization are second to none.

Remember watching Neon Genesis and loved it, pretty weird to understand though.

I've still yet to see the films though

I don't mind confusing or rather 'open' endings. It's just that the story feels like it's started halfway through.

It is telling from midway, then will introduce the historically moments to add clarity later.

Kinda lets you develop your own ideas on characters and then how they have changed.

To put it simply, Evangelion is about the characters, and not the overall story of why they're there, so it might be a bit dissapointing if you're looking for that.

The major events do get explained in flashback episodes, you have to stick with it.

Oh yes, I also preferred the new movies, but I just wasn't expecting such large changes to the plot/characters.

They looked awesome in 1080p.

I personally didn't really find EVA that good, thought it was over hyped etc but then I had watched rahxephon which I think is a far better series.... I did watch to the end but I can't see me bothering to watch it again any time soon.

Suggestions -
Rahxephon - similar to eva but a lot better in my opinion
Eureka Seven - good series, mecha, real life, great music and to top it off a good plot. Do not watch the film though as that's dire.
Gundam - take your pick really, if you want to watch anime then you have to at least watch one series lol

Massive bump!

I got back into it a couple of weeks ago now i'm on holiday. What a show, loved it all the way to the end, even the rather mind-blowing final episodes of the series. I'm glad they made the end of Evangelion films however as it was needed to explain what the hell was actually going on in this final episodes.

Brilliant stuff, now onto Outlaw Star...
