Considering a fun weekend car - opinions on these two please

Its not good to make so much noise and travel not so quickly though is it:/ i was looking at a VR6 2.9 but couldnt justify it.

Yea, it's great fun! Ace to have something that you can actually thrash and drive on the limits without fearing for your license. Some of the best cars I've driven on the road, in terms of entertainment, have had less than 100bhp!

Corrado, more importantly its relativly slow which is only a good thing, less chance of getting caught speeding. Noise is unreal!

Relative to what? A car of the time doing 0-60 in 6.4 seconds was ridiculous, I mean this is still above/equal to modern hot hatch territory.

He described it as a relic loved by people with rose tinted specs, that isn't the comment for a car that isn't your cup of tea, that is a comment for a car you believe is crap.

I don't see why a weekend car needs to be extravagant (or RWD ). To some people, they just want something a little bit more flashy and special to make the weekends that little bit more enjoyable.

The VR6 is fast, drives great, sounds great, looks great and is a bit of a classic - fits the bill perfectly for a "poor mans" weekend car IMO.

I said RWD droptop to cover many vehicles that fit in that. Unless you know of anything drop top and FWD that's decent? (apart from an Élan)

It doesn't have to be RWD at all, have that roll eyes back

Get a dc2 over some silly old vw

Enough power, looks good, and handles like a dream!

Win win!

So will a corrado with the advantage of sounding good and a little more comfortable.

A DC2 is more for someone who wants something focussed, not someone who is consisting a TT.

I've never driven a Corrado, but given it came from the era where VW didnt seem to make a single decently handling car, how come it actually handled when the Mk3 Golf it was based on didnt?

The Corrado was the same chassis as the mk2 golf and jetta at front and passat at rear, nothing like a mk3

"The Corrado offered exceptional handling for its time and was listed as one of the "25 Cars You Must Drive Before You Die" by the British magazine, Car"

A guy had a mint black Mk2 Golf with the 2.9 VR6 engine in which was supercharged about 10 years ago when I was growing up (into boy racer scene and all that).

I still think that it was the best car I have heard. Was damn quick too!

Fair enough :)

Even if it had the best handling in the world I don't think it is special enough for a weekend car:

'It's such a lovely day darling, let's take the 90s VW hatchback' :D.

Its the sort of car that you would want to keep in a garage and bring out on special days.

Its about the driving experience not the plate or badge on the car. Surely you understand this with your old Soarer ???

This forum is odd at times, whilst its good that its so diverse with many marques - it also seems to have a lot of people interested in image rather than the driving experience, the driving dynamics, how a car makes you feel, the engine noises etc.

All these things make driving an experience rather than seeing a car as a status symbol. So many posts, sadly, seem to be centred on image.

Funnily enough this thread did make me mention a Corrado VR6 to my girlfriend. She said ' Yeah I always liked them expecially in purple, would be a car to keep for nice days though' were her exact words!

For people who grew up in the 90s with Max Power etc I think VR6 holds a special place in the memory of that era, and I can't put my finger on why.

I have to say, the VR6 engine does sound very very nice, there is something about it that just seems to set it apart from other 6 cylinder sounds.

I agree, but it goes back to the old 'If you have to ask' thing. I didn't ask a single soul about getting a soarer and considering that I'm a remember of about a million forums that's impressive. I saw I could afford the insurance and thought '**** everything else. I'm getting that'. Its what allows me to spend £££ that I don't really have on keeping her running and improving where I can and dreaming of the day when I can spend ££££££ on making her awesome because it is a completely a heart over head thing. If you've got to post a thread about it a 15 year old odd VW isn't the right car for you.

That's just me anyway.
