Letter of Comfort for letting agent.

Ahoy, my friends are renting a place though a letting agent but the agency would like a letter of comfort to vouch for my friends to confirm that they are upstanding individuals and that I can step in on their behalf if things go wrong. Anyone had to write a similar letter that I can use for inspiration?

If it says that you are liable for your friends (and it will) then consider if you want to be liable for your friends.

Isn't it just a case of writing something along the lines of:

"I, Captain Morgoth Archibald Benvolio DiMedici III, declare that to the best of my knowledge Shaggy, Scooby, Velma and so on are all upstanding members of society, yo. We have been close friends for many years (they investigated me and my 'haunted' lighthouse ages ago - it was all a big misunderstanding and we laugh about it now over marijuana cookies and Welsh rarebit) and would gladly step in should they try to bulldoze the house down..."

If it's an non-enforceable reference then say what you like and give them all high fives. If it's a liability clause then have a bit of a think.

My wife was asked for a liabity clause by her sister, needless to say I was unhappy about it as potentially I could liable for several hundred pounds leading into the thousands. Luckily the wife is not stupid and asked her sister what exactly will we be signing up for. The wifes sister was insulted that we had the gaul to ask her about as we are family. Thankfully that was the end of that.

Worse. I am guarantor for my ex's rent of £600 a month. It was the only way we could go our seperate ways and she is the mother of my child, so I did it for my sanity and my daughters security. I don't think she would ever sting me and not pay her rent because I pay double the rate of child support but informally, so she would be screwed worse if she did me over, but its always in the back of my mind!

Come to think of it I also wrote a character reference for two different friends of mine. Long time ago so no copy, but just put in about how long you have known them and in what capacity and that you find them to be honest and trustworthy. Usually this is fine.

I would open with:

" My name is maximus Decimus meridius, commander of the legions of the north. These people are good upstanding citizens. Permit them residence on your land least I exact my vengeance, in this life or the next......"
