RE: My super machine. Pics included.

thats the ROG maximus 4 extreme, not the standard, which it looks like he has (either that, or im going blind)

if he has the standard one, he should be able to fit a PCIe sound card in the top slot:

*edit*
on closer inspection, this board also says RoG on one of the heatsinks, yet there is a PCIe slot on it where the power slot is on that other board.

me = confused
His box is the ROG Maximus Extreme, I didn't even realise there was a non-ROG version as usually Asus' high end boards are all ROG.

Edit: Pretty sure that photo must be a pre-production board as the Asus site doesn't list anything other than a ROG board.

Edit: Unless the board changed between B2 and B3 revisions?

i wonder if the B3 revision removed a PCIe slot? because thats the only explanation for the picture i found.

i suppose the OP could give back the sound card and opt for a USB sound card instead

or go for another board that will give him that extra slot, like the gigabyte UD7 (which has mysteriously dissapeared from OcUK)

i would also recommend getting a fan to assist with airflow between those cards, because they're going to be quite close to each other

This is the only thing I can think off, looks like they've taken it off to fit an extra power connector on.

I guess the other thing to have considered if it did have the slot was whether it even would work will 3 GPUs installed, not sure how many PCI-E lanes the board can have in total.

well, if it can do 4x SLI at x8/x8/x8/x8, im sure it can manage 3x SLI and a PCIe X1 soundcard

I do have 2 spare USB sound cards. I will use one of them and take the card back. I didn't even realize I thought it had PCI.

Make sure you don't open it as that's the only way they'll take it back.

I'm sure I saw a notice in the OcUK shop that they'll take stuff back if it's within 7 days and unopened.

The manual and product page don't mention anything about Quad card support, with 3 cards installed it uses 40lanes - I'm trying to find out just how many it has in total.

Btw. I won't be overclocking the CPU at this stage.

Seems utterly pointless getting three GTX 580s if you're going to keep the CPU at stock  The 580s will be seriously bottlenecked by the CPU giving you stunted performance.

I also see you've bought the twin fan versions of the 580, I'd have thought the reference fan would be better with 3 in your system? at least they expel the hot air out of the back of the system and not dump it all straight in the case.

Other than that though sweet system, have fun :)

would that be crossfire in x16/x16/x8, or are some of those lanes used up elsewhere (like for USB3)

if he did x8/x8/x8 (which would not bottleneck performance in any way) surely there would be room for an x1 soundcard (PCIe lanes wise)

There's physically nowhere to put another card in with 3 GTX 580's installed.

All the slots are occupied or blocked.

hence my ninja edit ;)

Not quick enough and irrelevant :D

also, if he gets waterblocks for the cards, they may only take up one slot

No, they would still need 2 slots:
