I'm thinking about buying 2 apple tv 2s.

Can I buy straight from apple and then jailbreak And install xbmc

Does the apple remote still work if I xbmc it.

Will it play 1080p flawlessly, my tv is a 42le4500, and it would be connected to my nas via my cat6 network.

Can xbmc play mkvs, avi and many others

Is there any better alternative to an appletv for £101, and can I plug a USB hdd into the USB in
the back? This isn't needed but would be nice

I've had an atv2 jail broken streaming from my nas using xbmc for 3 months and it's amazing. Plays all the formats you mentioned above, the apple tv remote works as well but if you have an android or iphone then you can also use the remote on that.

The atv2 is really a bargain for 85 quid after xbmc is set up, although xbmc allows 1080p playback the atv is limited by hardware to output at 720p so it will be downscaled.

thanks, and 720p is good enough. My dell SC1425 is being a pain in the neck so I think i'll need a nas to stream to this aswell :(

edit: where is it £85? :)

Just thinking about one of these myself to replace my current HTPC. I currently have an ext drive connected via USB and mopy stuff across as I need it. Does the ATV support plugging of USB drives?

And can you install Plex rather than XBMC?

Apple sell them refurbed and also they can be had on the bay for that much, as for the USB I don't see why not, don't quote me though. Plex can be installed, coming from using plex I prefer xbmc, simple because it doesn't require a pc running plex server running 24/7.

The xbmc iOS forum has an FAQ that is worth a read and covers plenty basic questions, check it out:
