Lately, I've got into crime/murder mystery stuff. I got into it when I came home from Uni and watched a load of 'Waking the Dead' on my mum's Sky Planner. I'm quite new to this genre so was wondering if anyone had any recommendations.

I've seen some of the popular ones such as Silence of the Lambs and the other Hannibal films.

I'm just about to watch 'The Suspicions of Mr Whicher' (Considine ***!). Which is another thing: true stories are great too.

Thanks,
Matt Wilde

One of my favourite serial killer type flicks is actually Resurrection starring Christopher Lambert. It's a little rough around the edges, but remains a stylish, pretty grim and brutal little flick that totally caught me out with the identity of the killer.

Chinatown is a masterpiece, I can highly recommend it. At the moment I'm struggling to think too much but I'll try and remember to come back to this tomorrow if I can think of anything else.

If you like surreal horror films you might want to check out a genre of movies known as Giallo/Gialli. A few of my personal favourites:

Blood and Black Lace
Tenebre
Lizard in a Woman's Skin
The New York Ripper

A few more thoughts: M (by Fritz Lang), The Third Man (has probably one of the best monologues ever committed to celluloid) and you can just about fit Casablanca into this. Points to note however are that they're all B&W and I have been accused of having something of a "Casablanca/12 Angry Men ideological supremacist mission" so take that into account.

Three classics:

In the Heat of the Night
The Big Sleep
The Maltese Falcon

the following are thrillers adapted from plays:

Sleuth
Deathtrap

A little dated but can't do wrong with Clint Eastwood and the Harry series:

Dirty Harry
Magnum Force
The Enforcer
Sudden Impact
The Dead Pool

and a few others:

Bullitt
The French Connection
Fargo

Ah yes, I forgot about the classic Film Noirs. I love them. Double Indemnity probably being my favourite.

'Brick' is also a very good modern day film noir (neo noir?) set in a high school.

I'm really after police investigation films (Se7en and Silence of the Lambs) are the best examples I can think of.

Oh, don't forget DePalma's Blow Out.

I also highly recommend Argento's Tenebrae, as mentioned above. It's a very accessible entry point to the Giallo genre and a very well constructed "whodunnit" as well.

Argento's Sleepless is constructed in a similar manner and, while a bit more twisted and vicious than Tenebrae is equally good stuff.

There have been some good TV crime on lately but they are subtitled
The Killing (Danish)
Spiral (French) series 3 has just finished on BBC4 but the other two are on DVD
Wallander (Swedish)
The new BBC crime thriller The Shadowline looks like it will be good after the opening episode.
The Icelandic film Jar City was on TV last night.
